Year 6 Aboriginal Girls Transition

Empowering Our Young Leaders Every Friday
Year 6 Aboriginal Girls Transition Program
At Narrandera High School, we are proud to offer the Year 6 Aboriginal Girls Transition Program, a dedicated initiative held every Friday from 9:30 to 11:15 am. This program is designed to support our Aboriginal girls as they prepare to transition from primary to high school, fostering confidence and cultural connection.
Guided by a committed team—Janaya Lyons, our Aboriginal Student Learning Support Officer at Narrandera High School; Simone Ingram, Aboriginal Education Officer at Narrandera Public School; and Joy O'Hara, Aboriginal Education Officer at Narrandera High School—the program provides a welcoming space for the girls to engage in a variety of enriching activities.
The program’s creative arts component includes weaving with raffia, and making earrings, bracelets, and key chains, allowing participants to explore traditional crafts and express their cultural heritage. Complementing these hands-on activities are painting sessions and wellbeing-focused mindfulness games and icebreakers that promote mental health, resilience, and peer connection.
An essential aspect of the program is it’s focus on high school readiness. Through interactive discussions and practical guidance, the girls build essential skills and confidence to navigate the transition smoothly, ensuring they feel supported and empowered as they step into their high school journey.
Narrandera High School celebrates this important program as a vital part of our commitment to Aboriginal education and student wellbeing. We look forward to continuing to nurture our young leaders and culturally strong students through this meaningful initiative.
Thank you for supporting our Aboriginal students and the Year 6 Aboriginal Girls Transition Program as we work together for a brighter future.
Big thank you to Simone for being a part of this program and for bringing the Year 6 girls to our school each week.
