Library News

It’s been a busy term in the IC/Library!

Book Club:

This has continued, with a group of dedicated readers meeting every second Tuesday to discuss various literary works. This term, stories we have read include Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton (a continuing favourite for many), and a short Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Luke H and Abbie B, both in Yr 12, are excellent leaders and the Book Club is looking forward to exploring more genres and authors next term!

Art Club:

Following last term’s very successful Bookmark Design Competition, Mrs Boxall and Ms Imbert started an Art Club! Every Friday, a group of art loving students gather in the library and work on the Challenge of the Week. Challenges so far have included “What makes you happy, and include a circle”, “Portrait”, and “Eldritch Horror”. It’s been great seeing what these creative students come up with!

National Simultaneous Storytime:

Every year for the past 25 years, the Australian Library and Information Association has held the National Simultaneous Storytime, where as many libraries across Australia read the same book at the same time on the same day. At the very last minute, Mrs Boxall entered McClelland College into this event (it’s free) and read The Truck Cat at 12 pm on 21 st May, along with 2,204,658 participants from 16,632 different locations! Unfortunately, it was a Wednesday, when all the MAPS were in full swing, and the audience for the reading was four amused staff members and one utterly enthralled student, but it still counted. Next year, we will hopefully have a bigger attendance!

Lord of the Flies:

The Year 7 Accelerate class has been studying Lord of the Flies, and have put up a display in the IC showing their work. Between an in-depth study of a conch shell, a graphic novel adaptation of a crucial scene, several maps, and a Monopoly Lord of the Flies game, it can only be described as a magnificent effort!

IDAHOBIT/Pride:

McClelland College is an inclusive, welcoming space for everybody, andthe library was festooned with rainbows, posters, and displays, showing support for our LGBTQIA+ students this year. It was a lovely sight! Many of the posters have been left up, as the messages bear repeating throughout the year.
