Golf Industry Immersion Day

On Tuesday 01 July 2025, Jayden W (Year 11) attended the Head Start Golf Industry Immersion Day at Commonwealth Golf Course. Organised by the BPA Head Start team, students were given the opportunity to explore a day in the life of a Greenkeeper. Careers in Greenkeeping begin with the Certificate III in Sports Turf Management and can be a steppingstone to other opportunities within the sector.
During the tour, Jayden participated in: a tour of the course; bunker maintenance and repair; greens maintenance; green house (looking at different grasses and plant seedlings); looking at irrigation (pumping station) and looking at the equipment used on the course. A day in the life of a Greenkeeper can be very diverse.
The group then toured the Greenskeeper and Mechanic’s shed where one full-time mechanic is employed to service the numerous vehicles, sharpen the lawn moving blades and maintain the equipment. The group heard about common types of grasses and the architecture, design and reconstruction of greens. Additional professional learning opportunities are available for Greenkeepers in addition to their apprenticeship qualification.
Opportunities for Greenskeepers to work overseas in some of the world’s most prestigious golf courses were discussed, not to mention opportunities to work at Golf Tournaments around the world. The students were able to see a profession where there were numerous possibilities, flexible hours, working outdoors with both technical and hands-on practical elements of the job. It was an eye-opening experience for the students and gave them insight into a career with many possibilities.
