GWR Basketball - Year 7 & 8
Year 8 Girls
The Year 8 girls' GWR Basketball team showed determination and teamwork throughout the day, and even though the competition was tough, the girls gave it their best effort. Unfortunately, the height of our opposition in our first game played a key role in our loss, whilst our second game was close for most of the game, but we fell short of a win. Their commitment and sportsmanship was a credit to the girls and Monivae.

Year 7 Girls
The Year 7 girls’ basketball team performed exceptionally well in the recent school competition. The team won both of their initial games, showcasing impressive teamwork and determination, which earned them a well-deserved place in the final. The team fought hard in a challenging match, demonstrating great sportsmanship and resilience throughout. Although they missed out on the winner's title, they should be very proud of their efforts and the way they supported one another. It was a fantastic team performance and a wonderful display of school spirit from all involved.

Year 8 Boys

The Year 8 boys' team, led by coach, Kareem, had a mixed day at the GWR competition. The boys' played a solid team game to defeat Trinity College, Colac, though unfortunately couldn’t replicate this result against Emmanuel College, Warrnambool. The boys' finished in 4th place after being defeated by Phoenix College, Ballarat in the 3rd place game. Thanks to Kareem for being a great coach and well done to the team for making the GWR stage of the competition.

Year 7 Boys
The Year 7 boys' team, ably led by Stella Grinham, fought gallantly for each of their games, with a 1-1 score card. They went into the 3rd place final very tired. The boys' played well and kept up scoring goal for goal. Their skills quite evident throughout the competition. Unfortunately they struggled with height under the ring when rebounding and so the opposition got away. Top effort for the Year 7 boys' for their first GWR basketball competition.

State Basketball

Our Year 9/10 boys' team competed at the State Championships undermanned but showed great character throughout the competition. The team started flat-footed in their opening game, losing to St Joseph's Echuca. They lifted significantly in their second and third matches against Catholic College Wodonga and Northcote High School, displaying much-improved performances. Despite their efforts, the boys struggled to maintain continuous plays and dominate the boards, which ultimately prevented them from securing victories. Kareem Muhktar and Ewan Anderson were the standout performers throughout the championship, consistently leading the team's efforts against quality opposition.
Introducing the 2026 Sports Captain
Hello, my name is Holly Rook and I am the Vice Captain of Sports for 2026. I have participated in a variety of sports throughout my childhood including swimming, netball and basketball. I swam for a number of years with the Hamilton Swimming Club during primary school. I play netball for the Hamilton Kangaroos, and basketball both domestically and representatively for Hamilton. One thing I am most looking forward to next year is showcasing all the athletic talent within the Monivae community. Another thing is providing more inclusive opportunities for a variety of activities within the school to increase both participation and school spirit.
