Mathmatics

We are starting the year by building a rock-solid foundation with numbers up to 6 digits (that’s hundreds of thousands!). Students are learning to:

  • Represent Numbers: Using the "Base 10" system to see how 10 ones become a ten, 10 tens become a hundred, and so on.
  • Order & Compare: Using number lines and symbols like > (greater than) and < (less than) to compare large values.
  • Odd vs. Even: Identifying patterns to quickly determine if a large number is odd or even.

Rather than just "doing the sums," we are teaching students mental "shortcuts" to make them faster and more accurate:

  • Doubles & Near-Doubles: Mastering "small doubles" (like $4 + $4) and "big doubles" (like $15 + $15) to solve problems quickly.
  • Regrouping & Renaming: This is what many parents remember as "carrying the one" or "borrowing." We call it regrouping to help students understand they are simply moving a group of ten from one column to another.

We are moving from simple counting to understanding how these two operations work together:

  • Visualizing Groups: Using arrays (rows and columns) and repeated addition (e.g., 5 + 5 + 5) to see the "why" behind the answer.
  • Fact Fluency: Developing a "quick fire" recall of the 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 10s times tables.
  • Problem Solving: Applying these facts to multiply and divide 1- and 2-digit numbers.

Students are exploring units of time, learning how to read various clocks and understand the relationship between seconds, minutes, hours, and days.
