Visualising When We Read
Our Year 5/6 students have been exploring the reading comprehension strategy of visualising. Visualising helps students create mental pictures as they read by using clues from the text along with their own background knowledge and experiences. Students imagine the characters, settings, events, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings described in a story or information text. Rather than simply reading the words on a page, students actively engage with the text, making their reading more meaningful and enjoyable.

Teaching students to visualise supports deeper comprehension because it encourages them to think carefully about what they are reading. As students continue reading and gather more information from the text, their mental images naturally change and become richer and more detailed. They may add new details, adjust how they picture a character or setting, or completely rethink an earlier image based on new evidence from the text. This ongoing process helps students understand that good readers are constantly monitoring and refining their thinking. Visualising also helps students identify when something doesn't make sense, allowing them to pause, reread, and clarify their understanding.

Visualising benefits students across all learning areas, not just English. Whether reading a novel, following a science procedure or learning about historical events, the ability to form mental images helps students process and retain new information. In Year 5 and 6, developing strong visualising skills encourages our creativity, enriches our vocabulary, and builds our confidence as readers.
