This Week's Learning Bulletin: WRITING
Dear Families,
This week’s bulletin focuses on the writing happening across our school and the many ways our children are developing as writers. Writing is about much more than handwriting. It’s a complex and creative process, and from Prep to Year 6, our writing program supports children to build all the skills strong writers need.
Our teaching is guided by the 7 Traits of Writing:
- Ideas developing strong content and clear messages
- Organisation structuring writing in a logical way
- Voice showing personality and emotion in writing
- Word Choice choosing precise and engaging vocabulary
- Sentence Fluency creating smooth and varied sentences
- Conventions using grammar, punctuation and spelling correctly
Presentation the overall appearance of writing
Across all year levels, writing sessions follow our Instructional Model. This includes explicit whole class teaching, targeted small group or individual support, and opportunities for children to reflect and share their learning together. This approach helps all students build confidence and grow as capable writers.
After visiting the Prep classrooms during Investigations, I was excited to see our young writers applying their writing knowledge with real purpose. Two children had written letters, one to the museum and another to a teacher in our school. What a wonderful example of children seeing the real life purpose in what they are learning and using their writing skills in meaningful ways.
Students also participate in dedicated spelling sessions to develop specific spelling skills. These sessions follow a systematic synthetic phonics approach and, as children move through the school, they begin exploring morphology, the meaningful parts of words, to strengthen both spelling and vocabulary knowledge.
We encourage you to read your child’s Year Level Bulletin, which provides a snapshot of how writing is taught in the classroom, along with practical ideas to support your child’s learning at home.
