Welcome back to Term 4! As we begin the final term of the year, we look forward to a busy and rewarding few months of learning, growth and celebration. Students have already had an exciting start to the term, enjoying two fantastic incursions last week. We were entertained by Being Indy, performed by Books Alive, and enjoyed a lively performance from the Emerson School Rock Band. Both experiences provided students with wonderful opportunities to engage, learn and have fun.

In Mathematics, students revisited a range of addition and subtraction strategies to strengthen their understanding of number and improve their problem-solving skills. They explored and practised the bar model, split strategy, jump strategy for subtraction, and the vertical algorithm, learning how and when each strategy can be used effectively. Students compared different methods, explained their mathematical thinking, and identified the most efficient strategy for solving a variety of calculations.

In Writing, students explored poetry and experimented with different ways to play with language. They learnt about Clerihew poems, creating their own humorous poems about people, and investigated homophones, using words that sound the same but have different meanings to create engaging and creative poems. We are revising narrative writing with a focus on developing rich character descriptions and creating detailed settings using the five senses. They are learning how to help readers visualise a story by describing what characters can see, hear, smell, taste and feel. Students are also continuing to build their punctuation skills and are setting daily goals to improve their use of capital letters, full stops and other punctuation marks in their writing.

In Reading, students explored a variety of poems and developed their understanding of poetic features, including lines, stanzas and repetition. They enjoyed analysing Katy Perry’s Firework, identifying examples of similes, metaphors and personification and discussing the deeper message and themes conveyed through the lyrics. These activities helped students build their ability to interpret figurative language and think critically about an author's purpose. We are also focusing on fables, exploring the characteristics of this text type and the important lessons they teach. They are identifying character traits, discussing how characters’ actions influence events, and determining the moral or message of each fable. Through these activities, students are strengthening their comprehension skills and developing a deeper understanding of how authors use stories to teach valuable life lessons.
