Exploring Palembang: A Memorable Overseas Experience

Introduction: A trip to Indonesia had always been on my travel bucket list, however, I never imagined that I would travel to Palembang in the first week of the term 3 holidays. From the breathtaking landscapes to the rich cultural experiences, the trip exceeded my expectations in every way.

The Journey: The trip began with a car trip to Melbourne, before departing to our first of three airports: Melbourne, Bali, and Jakarta before arriving in Palembang. Upon arrival, I was greeted by two members from Kusuma Bangsa, who would highlight the hospitality we would experience over our stay. After settling in, I couldn’t wait to explore the local attractions and immerse myself in the local culture that makes Palembang so unique.

Highlights of the Trip:

  • Kusuma Bangsa:
One of the most memorable experiences was visiting Kusuma Bangsa, where we were greeted warmly by staff and taken on a school tour. The junior students were excited to meet us, we were mobbed like celebrities and wanted to practise their English. The people left a lasting impression on me.
  • Cultural Activities:
Another highlight was engaging with the local culture. I attended a shop that makes traditional Songket and tried pempek, which gave me an authentic taste of Palembang’s rich heritage.
  • Way of the Cross - Via Crucis:
For nature lovers, Sukomoro is paradise. I spent the morning walking through the stations of the cross, where the views of the local wilderness: created a perfect backdrop for the stations and the experience was simply breathtaking. The scenery was something I’ll never forget.

Challenges Along the Way: No trip is complete without a few unexpected moments. There were some minor hiccups, such as the rush through the airport at Bali for our connecting flight, which showcased the helpful nature of the Indonesian people.  Or the language barrier, there are a few phrases I learnt in my time ‘saya tidak Bahasa Indonesia belum’ or ‘makanan tidak pedas’. However, each challenge added a layer of adventure and helped me grow as a traveller.

Final Thoughts: My trip to Palembang was a truly enriching experience. Whether you’re a nature lover or a history buff or want to experience Indonesian culture, this destination offers something for everyone. I can’t wait to return and explore even more of what this incredible place has to offer!
