GAT |  Avenues Exchange

As we approach the end of Semester One, it is an opportune time to reflect on and celebrate the many achievements and experiences that have enriched learning at Cheltenham Secondary College over the past term.

Students in Years 8–11 have successfully completed their semester examinations. These assessments provide an important opportunity for students to consolidate their learning, demonstrate their understanding and reflect on their progress. I commend our students for the maturity, resilience and perseverance they demonstrated throughout the examination period and encourage them to take pride in the effort they have invested in their studies.

Our Year 12 students also completed the General Achievement Test (GAT). The GAT is an important component of the VCE assessment process and provides students with valuable experience in preparing for their final examinations later in the year. Congratulations to our Year 12 students for the positive and focused manner in which they approached this important milestone.

Our Year 10 students have recently participated in Work Experience placements across a wide range of industries and workplaces. For many students, this was their first experience in a professional setting and an important step in exploring future pathways. Feedback from students and employers has been overwhelmingly positive, with students demonstrating initiative, responsibility and a willingness to learn. We are grateful to the many businesses, organisations and families who supported this program and helped make it such a meaningful experience for our young people.

A highlight to finish off the term has been the annual Avenues Exchange, where students and staff travelled to Adelaide to reconnect with our long-standing partner school, Avenues College. The exchange is a unique and much-anticipated event in which students participate in 27 sporting and cultural activities, competing for the prestigious Avenues Exchange Cup. Beyond the friendly rivalry, the exchange provides students with opportunities to develop teamwork, resilience, sportsmanship and lasting friendships while experiencing a different school community. It was wonderful to see our students embrace every opportunity, represent Cheltenham Secondary College with pride and contribute to another highly successful exchange.

As Semester One draws to a close, I would like to sincerely thank our staff for their ongoing dedication, professionalism and commitment to supporting every student to achieve their personal best. Whether preparing students for examinations, supporting our senior students through the GAT, coordinating Work Experience placements, facilitating the Avenues Exchange or providing high-quality learning experiences each day. Their efforts make a significant difference to the lives of our students. I also thank our families for their continued partnership and support throughout the semester. I wish everyone in our community a safe, restful and well-deserved break and look forward to another exciting semester ahead.
