Level 5 & 6

Welcome to Week 1!
Welcome back to Term 4! We hope all of our Grade 5 and 6 students and families had a wonderful and refreshing break. We are looking forward to an exciting final term filled with lots of learning, special events and opportunities to celebrate the year together.
Reminders:
Hats
With the warmer weather returning, it’s time for hats to come back to school!
Grade 5 and 6 students are reminded to bring their school hat back to school if they haven’t already and to make sure they are wearing it during outdoor activities and break times.
Please encourage students to get into the habit of having their hat ready each day so they can enjoy their time outside. Hats on, play on! ☀️
Literacy
Reading
This week in Reading, students will begin analysing speeches and exploring what makes a public speaker engaging and effective. Students will identify the behaviours and traits demonstrated by engaging speakers, considering how features such as body language, eye contact, expression, tone of voice and confidence can help capture an audience’s attention.
Students will use their observations to build an understanding of the techniques effective public speakers use and consider how they can apply these strategies when delivering their own speeches.
Writing
This week in Writing, students will reflect on their learning and set goals for Term 4. Students will consider what they would like to achieve during their final term of the year and identify strategies they can use to work towards their goals. This will encourage students to start the term with a positive mindset and consider how they can make Term 4 as successful as possible.
Phormes
This week, both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will be working through Spelling focus 211. Students will continue developing their understanding of spelling patterns and applying these skills to their reading and writing.
Language Conventions
This week in Language Conventions, students will focus on handwriting using Victorian Modern Cursive. Through a space-themed handwriting lesson, students will practise forming and joining letters correctly while exploring a range of interesting space facts.
What you can do at home:
- Talk with your child about speeches they may have heard or watched and discuss what made the speaker engaging.
- Ask your child about the goals they have set for Term 4 and how they plan to work towards achieving them.
- Encourage your child to practise clear and consistent handwriting at home.
Maths
This week, both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will begin exploring Data. Students will develop their understanding of how data can be collected, represented and interpreted, while using their mathematical thinking to make observations and draw conclusions from different sets of information.
What you can do at home:
- Look for examples of data in everyday life, such as graphs, tables, sporting statistics or weather information.
- Ask your child what information they can gather from a graph or table and what conclusions they can make from the data.
- Create a simple survey as a family and discuss different ways the results could be represented.
CBL
This term in CBL, students will begin exploring our new focus, Survival and Service. Students will consider the importance of giving back to others and explore how acts of service can strengthen connections and make a genuine difference within our school and wider community.
Challenge: Strengthen our community by giving back and inspiring others to pay it forward.
Essential Question: How do acts of service help communities survive, connect and thrive?
Guiding Questions:
- What does it mean to serve others?
- How has our school and wider community invested in us?
- Our time, skills and effort can make a genuine difference. How?
This week, students will begin considering these ideas as they start exploring ways they can positively contribute to their community.
Wellbeing
This week in Wellbeing, students will continue their learning through RRRR (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships). Students will participate in activities and discussions designed to strengthen their social and emotional skills and support positive, respectful relationships with others.
What you can do at home:
- Talk with your child about what they are looking forward to during their final term of the year.
- Discuss the importance of working respectfully with others, particularly when planning and completing tasks as part of a team.
- Encourage your child to identify strategies they can use when faced with challenges or disagreements.
