Senior School News

Our students have had an amazing start to Term 3, slipping back into the swing of things as if they’d never been on holidays.
A big congratulations to all of our Year 5 students who received their NAPLAN results from earlier in the year. Students and parents should be extremely proud of how they performed. What an outstanding effort from everyone across the board.
Year 5
Maths
In maths, students begun exploring mixed numerals and improper fractions, comparing, ordering, and finding equivalents with related denominators. They also practised adding and subtracting fractions with the same or related denominators.
Students have also started exploring acute, right, obtuse, straight, and reflex angles. They have been using a protractor to measure the interior angles of polygons and have begun building their own angle golf course as a rich task to demonstrate their knowledge.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have just finished their first unit on Black Cockatoo. While reading this novel, they explored Tier 3 vocabulary, sentence fragments, conjunctions (because, but, so), sentence expansion, character analysis, and adverbials.
Students have enjoyed reading about Mia, a young Aboriginal girl torn between her cultural heritage and the pressures of modern life. After rescuing an injured black cockatoo, she begins to find her voice, stand up for what she believes in, and reconnect with her family and traditions. It has been wonderful listening to the students’ understandings of Mia and the trials and tribulations she faces.
- We will be starting Dirrarn next which is a follow on of Black Cockatoo.
THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE
What a joy to start Term 3 by reading about our students’ incredible holidays and their most unforgettable moments. Our Grade 5 and 6 students have created some truly amazing writing pieces. Be sure to ask your child about their story!
Topic- Our Blue Planet
We have begun an exciting journey through the galaxy, exploring the wonders of our solar system. Our travels have taken us from the scorching surface of the Sun, past the rocky planets and through the swirling asteroid belt, all the way to the icy reaches of Neptune and the mysterious Kuiper Belt. We have explored the vast distances between each planet and discovered how they rotate on their axes as they journey around the Sun.
Buddies
We are always grateful of the time we get to spend with our wonderful buddies every fortnight, where we laugh, have some fun, get to know eachother and complete an educational activity.
Year 6
Maths
Grade 6 students have been comparing, adding, and subtracting fractions with unrelated denominators, as well as solving multi-step word problems involving equivalent fractions. In angles, grade 6's have been looking at supplimentary and ocmplementary angles. Complementary angles are two angles whose measures add up to 90 degrees. Supplementary angles are two angles whose measures add up to 180 degrees.
Literacy
Year 6 students have been exploring fascinating topics such as life on other planets, Earth's atmosphere, crust, orbit, hemispheres, and rotation, as well as tectonic plates and space. They have researched the planets in our solar system, choosing one to investigate in detail, examining its habitability, physical features, and position relative to the Sun.
We have also started looking at the structure of an information report, which they will use to write about space. This inquiry is helping deepen their understanding of both Earth and the wider universe.
6N PETS
6N has created their own fascinating classroom pets, but these aren’t your ordinary animals, they’re ROCK PETS! Each student designed and decorated their very own rock pet, giving them unique names, personalities, and stories. These creative little companions have brought a lot of fun and imagination into the classroom, sparking conversations and inspiring students to share their ideas. It’s been wonderful to see how these rock pets have become part of our learning environment and a source of joy for everyone in 6N!
I wonder who will look after the pets when Ms Newey jets off to Peru in 4 weeks.
Bookweek Incursion
George Ivanoff is a popular Australian author known for his thrilling Monster series, filled with action, adventure, and unforgettable characters. Recently, our Year 5 and 6 students had the exciting opportunity to meet George Ivanoff in person. They learned fascinating insights about his writing process, the inspiration behind his monster books, and even picked up some tips on creating their own stories. It was an inspiring experience that sparked their creativity and love for reading.
Book Week Parade -> 20th August
IMAX (5 &6) -> 1st September
Fantastic effort from our AFL 9's superstars!
