Orienteering on Harmony Day!

On Harmony Day Mr Espenschied and Mr Durrington organised an orienteering activity, where students had to locate different nation's flags around the school. Once the flags had been located, they then had to colour the nation's location on a world map. Here are some photos of the students enjoying themselves during this task.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN for our Year Three and Year Five students has now been completed. All students who participated in the NAPLAN this year did an amazing job, and we look forward to seeing their results later in the year. Parents can expect to receive their child's results in term three. Thank you to Mr Durrington for organising and supervising the testing period.

Mathematics

Year Three and Four students have been exploring 3D shapes over the past week. Concepts explored have included the characteristics of 3D shapes including faces, vertices and edges. The students have constructed some 3D shapes, using a variety of materials. Here are some photos of our students constructing pyramids using newspapers.

Literacy

Year three and four students have examined the life of Ned Kelly across the course of term one. Students have read a wide range of texts on Kelly's life, and written a variety of narratives and persuasive pieces to demonstrate their understanding. The students have also examined the 'Ned Kelly' series of paintings by Sidney Nolan, which combines the themes of Australian history, Australian landscapes and European modern art.

Here are some examples of our students art emulating the style of Nolan, and some persuasive pieces addressing the question of, 'Is Ned Kelly a Hero, or a Villain?'

Ned Kelly- Hero or Villain

By Mae

I think Ned Kelly was a hero.

First I think Ned Kelly is a hero because he was forced to kill. He was forced to kill because the policeman picked on him and his family.

Second he saved the drowning boy. When he was saving the boy he could have fallen in himself.

Finally, he freed the hostage because he felt bad for him. They were at the Glenrowan Inn. He took a risk - how was it a risk? Because the hostage could have stopped the train.

I think Ned Kelly is a hero. It is your choice what side you are on.

Ned Kelly - Hero or Villain?

By Cienna

I believe Ned Kelly was a hero from Australian history.

Firstly, Ned Kelly risked his life by saving a drowning boy. He was only eleven years old turning twelve.

Secondly, Ned Kelly was forced to kill because the police were picking on his family. His family were trying to help him.

Thirdly, he was nice to the town because the police were trying to hurt the people, because the town's people were on Ned's side.

I feel like Ned is a hero, even though he did a lot of bad things. I believe he's a hero.

Ned Kelly - Hero or Villain?

Ned Kelly was good and bad in some ways. I believe that Ned Kelly is a villain.

I believe Ned Kelly is a villain for these reasons. Firstly, Ned killed and injured a bunch of policeman or troopers. That is what they called them back then.

Secondly, Ned tried to kill a bunch of policeman (troopers) by derailing the train at the Glenrowan Inn.

Finally Ned received a stolen horse from a mate but Ned didn't know it was stolen so when the police (troopers) found out he ended up in gaol for three whole years. Do you think that is bad, because I do!

Ned  Kelly was caught and he paid the price by being hanged. Personally I still believe that Ned Kelly is a villain.
