Grade 3 | Blackwood

CLEVER CLASS

At the end of Term 1, Grade 3 Blackwood had a focus on Anzac Day. We learnt why Anzac Day is commemorated on 25th April each year, and what occurs at an Anzac Day service. We looked at a range of Anzac Day symbols, and discussed how they were linked to WWI. We learnt that Anzac Day is an occasion when we reflect not only about the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought in Gallipoli but also give thanks to Australians who currently serve in our Defence Force.

Mrs Woods shared that her Grandfather Leonard Oakley served in WWII as a Beaufighter Pilot in the Air Force based in Cornwall UK. He was lucky to be discharged from service and return to Geelong with his war bride and new baby son. Mrs Woods’ family have his war medals and a range of his war memorabilia which we were able to look at. Here are some photos of us looking at the medals, old photos, flying hat, goggles, scarf and log book.
