Our Integrated Studies unit this term is Young Entrepreneurs, an exciting Economics and Business inquiry in which students will explore how to use limited resources, make smart financial decisions and develop enterprising ideas to raise money for our school. Students will investigate what customers value, develop business ideas, consider budgeting and pricing, and work collaboratively towards a real fundraising event.
We are hoping to bring this learning to life with an Alvie Fun Fiesta on Friday, 27 November! We are currently awaiting School Council approval, but families are encouraged to pencil this date into their calendars. More details will follow once approval is confirmed.
We have been busy learning about time, including reading analogue and digital clocks, calculating elapsed time and solving problems involving duration. I was absolutely delighted with the outstanding growth students demonstrated between their pre- and post-assessments. Their hard work and persistence have certainly paid off!
We are now moving into fractions, strengthening our understanding of equivalent fractions and learning to add and subtract fractions with different but related denominators.
Our Respectful Relationships lesson on stress turned out to be an absolute highlight! Students explored the little and big things that can cause stress in everyday life, and I was genuinely surprised by some of the situations they identified. There was plenty of laughter as we discovered our shared frustrations, funny little niggles and the very different things that can rock our worlds!
Importantly, students learnt that we all experience stress differently and that recognising our feelings is the first step towards managing them. It was a wonderfully honest, thoughtful and often hilarious discussion.
Our visit to Colac Secondary College was a tremendous success! The day began with some dancing, followed by a wonderful range of activities including chemistry and cooking. Students even made some very cute little orange baskets!
We also enjoyed a BBQ and some truly lovely hospitality from the staff and students. It was a fantastic opportunity for our Grade 5 students to experience the secondary school environment, try new activities and enjoy learning in a different setting.
A big thank you to everyone at Colac Secondary College for making us feel so welcome!
