Grade 5/6

Welcome to another term in 5/6.
We have begun our class novel Black Cockatoo, exploring the text while building our vocabulary with new and interesting words such as wrath and prying, whilst considering how these words enhance a piece of writing.
This week we've been reflecting on our school holidays, with a focus on crafting more engaging and varied sentence openings. We've been challenging ourselves to move beyond simple starters such as 'On my holidays' and overused connectives like 'and then', instead experimenting with more descriptive and purposeful language. Here are a few examples of our opening paragraphs.
Hooray, It’s the holidays! On Good Friday we went to Drouin to my dad’s parents’ house. We went to the Good Friday service. On Sunday it was Easter and we got really fluffy rugs to put in our rooms. Our cousins came over from Leongatha. It was so much fun being with our family, but it was sadly time to go on Monday. - Fletcher Cheesman
Aussie Easter in my family is crazy!!!
My auntie had a baby just before Easter. We had to go to Melbourne (I just wanted to stay home). Anyway, we went to Melbourne. When we got there, my little cousin forced me to find Easter eggs with her, which was extremely annoying because the desserts were coming out. - Acadia Jones
Sometimes you need to relax, and that’s exactly what I did these holidays. But on Easter Saturday I went to Luna Park. I went on some scary rides. After that, we got Italian food, I had pizza. - Alastair Lane
