5-6 Class

(Ms Murphy)

Literacy In Literacy, we are continuing to enjoy the incredible writing of Michael Morpurgo in War Horse. We have been analysing the author’s language choices and learning how these shape meaning and influence the emotions we feel as readers. It was a particularly emotional chapter today, and the students responded with impressive depth and insight.

In Writing, inspired by the main character Joey, students have been creating pieces from an animal’s perspective, carefully selecting language to bring their character to life. These will be showcased in a class book that reflects our commitment to making intentional choices to convey meaning.

We have also been focusing on contractions, prefixes and suffixes, and developing an understanding of how these change the meaning of words.

Mathematics We recently celebrated outstanding growth in the whole number unit across the class, which was wonderful to see. Students have also completed their pre-assessment for multiplication and division, providing a clear baseline as we begin this unit through explicit and structured instruction.

Integrated StudiesIn Integrated, students have been working in small groups to research and prepare presentations on places with extreme weather conditions, such as Siberia and Alaska. They are learning to explain the scientific reasons behind these conditions, including the Earth’s tilt and distance from the equator.

STEM In STEM, students will be designing and creating cars that are propelled by wind.

We are collecting plastic bottles and bottle caps for this project, so please send any you have at home with your child. We would greatly appreciate your support.

Congratulations to our Students of the Week!

20/3/26 - Mia, for showing great persistence in her mathematics work this week. Mia quickly grasped the concepts of rounding and estimation. It has been wonderful to see her confidence grow so quickly, and she should be very proud of her efforts.

20/3/26 - James, for recognition of his outstanding contributions both personally and academically, values we highly regard at Alvie Primary School. James is a kind and supportive friend who has helped a mate feel safe and secure within the classroom. He has also demonstrated fantastic growth in mathematics, particularly in Place Value, where he has made significant progress. We are very proud of his efforts and the positive way he contributes to our learning community.
