St Augustine’s Intermediate Cricket StreetSmart State Champions

Saints Intermediate cricket team travelled to Brisbane to compete in the state finals of the Intermediate T20 Cricket competition. The semi-final clash was against Cathedral College, Rockhampton. Batting first, the boys put on an imposing target of 6/150, led by Ian De Lange with 48 runs. Spectacular fielding and tight bowling ensured the boys bowled out Cathedral College for 56 runs. Harvey Rees (5/8) was the pick of the bowlers and Ian backed up his batting effort with 2/1 with the ball. This set the boys up for the State Final with the Sunshine Coast’s Matthew Flinders College.

Bowling first, Saints restricted Matthew Flinders College to just 97 runs from their 20 overs. Ian De Lange was a strong contributor with the ball taking a miserly 3/3 from 4 overs and was well supported by wicket-takers Blake Watson (1/17 off 3 overs), Xavier Curtin (1/9 off 4 overs), Harvey Rees (1/31 off 4 overs) and Lachlan Hodge (1/19 off 3 overs). In reply, Saints made a steady start with the bat despite losing frequent wickets during the run chase falling to 4/44 after captain, Samson Pittorino, was run out for a well compiled 29 runs. Solid contributions from Lucas Brierley (18) and Harvey Rees (14) got Saints within striking distance of the total at 5/86. A small collapse saw Saints lose three quick wickets for just 8 runs to leave the game in the balance at 8/94. Ashton Salerno and Hugh Ferguson remained composed as they guided the team past the total and secure a memorable win. Congratulations to Mr Churchward, Mr Watson and the team on a historic achievement.

Thanks Mr Moote and Mr Robertson for attending on the day and Mrs Leicht for your organisation of the day.

BDO Hockey

Well done to the Saints Junior and Senior Hockey teams on a successful 2024 BDO Hockey Carnival. The Junior team, consisting of Years 7-9 students, were undefeated, throughout the tournament on their way to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Smithfield High in the final. Not to be outdone, our Senior team also claimed victory, edging out Redlynch State College 2-1 in a nail-biting final. Well done boys, and thank you coaches and managers Mr Seivers, Mr Brimstone, Mr Watson, and Mrs Bolton for your work organising these teams. Good luck to our boys who are competing in the NQ All Schools Hockey competition this week in Townsville.
