Discovering How the Hospitality Industry Ticks

Fourteen hospitality students and I attended the QTIC Regional Tourism Careers Roadshow at the Cairns TAFE at the end of last term. There they gained a snapshot of the industry by listening to several managers followed by a Q&A session. They worked with a chef to make Lahpet Thoke, a salad from Myanmar containing fermented tea leaves and mixed some unusual mocktails. 

Earlier, we toured the five-star Crystalbrook Bailey Hotel and learnt about its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The hotel was built with various sustainable materials, such as carpet made from recycled plastic, wooden surfaces abound and waste is carefully sorted to cut down on what goes into landfill.
