A successful ending for the McCarthy Chess Club in 2024
As Term 4 comes to an end, the McCarthy Chess Club hosted the Sarah Sommerlad Memorial Trophy. This is the third year the chess tournament has been run by McCarthy Catholic College. The Sarah Sommerlad Trophy is the last major game in the chess calendar for 2024.
This year, players from Calrossy and Farrer battled out against the McCarthy players in what was an exciting day of chess. Over forty players competed in a number of round robin chess games, with all players showing great sportsmanship.
The final game to determine who won the Sarah Sommerlad Trophy for 2024 was between a player representing Farrer and Jackson Medlock from McCarthy. In a close game, Jackson managed to win the shield for McCarthy Catholic College.
I wish to thank Ms Stebbings for her vital contributions in ensuring the smooth running of the competition as well as Mr Blanch from Farrer and Mr Wood from Calrossy for bringing and supervising the players.
Congratulations to all twenty McCarthy players who took part in the final tournament. Chess Club will resume next year and is open to all players.
Fun Chess Fact
The game of chess reached Western Europe around the year 1000. Around 1475 changes were made to the game and it evolved into its more current form. Also around this time formal rules began to appear.
