Library News

Welcome and Merry Christmas from the McCarthy Library Staff.

This term has been an exciting time in the Library with students enjoying our cool, friendly and comfortable space before school, during class, break times and for Study Club on Tuesday afternoons.   Again this term our students are coming to the library and enjoy taking time out to relax, to find and read great books and play games like chess, UNO, Spot It, Bananagrams and cards.  It continues to be a place for kindness, fun and laughter.  The library continues to be a welcoming and popular place for our students to relax and be social.

HSC preparation and research workshop in the library

Recently we hosted a workshop for Year 11/12 students as they are beginning their HSC studies. They were shown where and how to access resources to assist them with assessment tasks and preparation for the HSC.

Junior English Class Visits

The English Renaissance Accelerated Reading program for Year 7 and 8 is continuing again with fortnightly visits this term. New books are arriving and being put on display in the library so look out for these displays.

This term, Year 8 Geography classes are visiting the library to learn, build and practice their library research skills.  The focus in Term 4 is on students using our online library space to conduct library and internet research and to practice critically assessing the websites, e-resources and books they find.  Students are then guided through using these information sources to build on their reading for information and summarising skills.  The goal is to provide students practice to drive their own reliable and relevant information seeking to support paragraph writing on curriculum aligned topics for the HSIE unit Interconnections.

Overdue library books

Currently our staff are reviewing overdue items out in students’ names. If you have any library books at home, no matter how overdue, we are always pleased to see books returned.  Check in your lockers, your bags and at home and drop them in the Returns chute at the library counter.  We are open to conversations and solutions, so come in and chat to library staff about any issues with your overdues.  As always the cooperation of students and families is appreciated in locating and returning overdue books.
