Year 8 - Make Term 4 a real blast!

As we come to the end of Term 3, it is a wonderful opportunity to pause and reflect on just how much our Year 8 students have grown throughout the year.

The Year 8 cohort has experienced a busy and rewarding term, with many opportunities to learn, challenge themselves, develop new friendships, build independence and discover more about themselves as learners and as members of our school community. There have certainly been successes and celebrations, as well as moments that have challenged us to learn, adapt and grow.

As we look towards Term 4, I encourage every Year 8 student to take some time over the break to reflect on the year so far.

Reflection does not need to be complicated. Students might consider:

  • What am I proud of this year?

  • What have I improved at since the beginning of Year 8?

  • What has been challenging, and what have I learned from that experience?

  • What do I do well as a learner?

  • What could I do differently in Term 4?

  • How do I contribute to a positive classroom and school environment?

  • Who has supported me this year, and how have I supported others?

  • What is one goal I would like to achieve before the end of the year?

Students and parents are also encouraged to take the time to read through the Semester reports carefully. Reports provide an important opportunity to celebrate progress and achievement while also identifying areas where students can continue to develop. Ask - What is my report telling me about my learning, my effort and my next steps?

We encourage students and their parents or carers to discuss the reports and consider ways to set some simple, achievable goals for Term 4.

The holidays are a time to step away from the routines and demands of school.

I encourage our students to have a safe and enjoyable break, get plenty of rest, spend time with family and friends, pursue interests, get outdoors and do things that make them happy. Sometimes the best preparation for a new term is simply having the opportunity to relax, laugh, reconnect and recharge.

Term 4 is a chance for every student to finish the year strongly.

We encourage students to think about how they can make Term 4 a real blast — not simply by having fun, but by making the most of the opportunities that come their way.

  • Say yes to opportunities to learn something new.

  • Ask questions.

  • Have a go, even when something feels difficult.

  • Challenge yourself.

  • Celebrate the successes of others.

  • Try something you haven't tried before.

  • And remember that making mistakes is an important part of learning and growing.

Our goal should not be to be perfect. It should be to finish the year knowing that we have continued to grow, learn and become better versions of ourselves.

As we move forward together, one message remains particularly important: respectful relationships are paramount.

Respect is at the heart of a positive school community. It is demonstrated in the way we speak to one another, listen to one another, respond when we disagree, include others, care for our environment and recognise that everyone has the right to feel safe, valued and respected.

Students can contribute by:

  • Speaking to others with kindness and courtesy;

  • Thinking before they speak or post;

  • Including others rather than excluding them;

  • Resolving disagreements calmly and appropriately;

  • Asking for help when a situation becomes difficult;

  • Respecting different opinions, personalities and perspectives;

  • Looking out for one another; and

  • Taking responsibility for their own choices and actions.

As we head into Term 4, students and families are also reminded of the importance of responsible technology and social media use.

Under Australian law, social media platforms covered by the minimum-age requirements are restricted for children under 16. Students should therefore ensure that they are not using age-restricted social media platforms when they are below the required age.

It is also important to remember that social media and recreational use of mobile phones are not permitted at school. Students should not be accessing, posting, messaging, filming, photographing or sharing content through social media while at school.

What may seem like a harmless post, photograph, message or video can have significant consequences for others. Students should always consider - Would I be comfortable if this was shown to my parents, my teachers or the whole school community?

If the answer is no, it is probably best not to post or share it.

Parents and carers are encouraged to talk with their young person about responsible digital citizenship, including privacy, respectful communication, online safety, appropriate content and the potential impact that online behaviour can have on themselves and others.

There is still plenty of learning, growth and opportunity ahead for our Year 8 students.

Let us return in Term 4 refreshed, positive and ready to make the most of what the final term has to offer. Let us celebrate how far our students have come, learn from the experiences that have shaped them, and encourage them to finish the year with pride.

Most importantly, let us continue to look after one another, treat each other with respect and work together to ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, belong and thrive.

Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing break, Year 8. Enjoy the time with your family and friends, recharge your batteries, and come back ready to make Term 4 a great one!
