Literacy

Yarra Road has been participating in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge ever since it began in 2005. This year’s challenge finished on Friday, 4th September, and students in Victoria read over 2 million books. That’s 2 million reasons to celebrate! Here at Yarra Road, 178 students completed the challenge and 7,295 books were read and entered online!

Two students deserve special mention - they read the most books in the school! They are Kei H (1/2B) for reading 115 books and William S (3/4B) for reading 93 books.

The Reading Challenge certificates for all students who completed the challenge will arrive and be given to students in Term 4.

With holidays coming up, it is the perfect opportunity to check out your local library. Try reading a book by a different author, or maybe there are some new books out that look interesting or exciting.

Here is a good guide for choosing books at the right level, especially for beginning readers:

  1. Pick a book that you are interested in.

  2. Open the book to any page.

  3. Read the page.

  4. Hold up one finger for every word you do not know.

What the Number of Fingers Mean

  • 0-1 fingers: The book is most likely to be too easy.

  • 2-3 fingers: The book is a good fit.

  • 4 fingers: The book is challenging; it may need a parent’s help.

  • 5+ fingers: The book is most likely to be too hard to read alone and might cause frustration.

Happy holidays everyone – and keep reading!
