Reading

The Year 5 cohort has been immersed in stories, creativity, and culture during Reading this fortnight! Students have finished reading Wylah the Koorie Warrior: Guardians and reflected on the characters, events, and important themes explored throughout the novel.

As part of Book Week, students also participated in a range of fun activities celebrating their love of reading and stories. They have now begun exploring Dreamtime stories, learning about the rich storytelling traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and considering the messages, characters, and connections to Country within these important stories.

Writing

This week in Year 5, students have been exploring the Latin roots tain, ten and tin, which relate to the meaning “to hold.” Students investigated how these roots appear in words such as contain, retain, maintain, attention and continue, helping them to understand the meanings of unfamiliar words by identifying word parts.

Students have also been exploring fractured fairy tales. They have been looking at traditional fairy tales and discovering how authors can change characters, settings, plots or endings to create a fun and unexpected twist on a familiar story. Students enjoyed thinking creatively and exploring how a well-known fairy tale can be transformed into something completely new!

The Year 5 cohort has been turning, measuring, and creating angles in Mathematics this fortnight! Students have been learning how to accurately draw and measure angles using protractors and exploring the different types of angles they encounter.

They have also been investigating angle relationships and challenging themselves to find pairs of angles that add up to 360°. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, students have been developing their accuracy, mathematical reasoning, and confidence when working with angles.

Inquiry

From the classroom to the animal enclosures, the Year 5 cohort became wildlife investigators for the day! During their visit to Melbourne Zoo, students had the opportunity to observe a variety of animals and put their Inquiry learning about adaptations into action.

They used their knowledge of structural, behavioural, and physiological adaptations to identify the amazing features and behaviours that help animals survive in their environments. The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real-world examples while developing a deeper appreciation for the incredible diversity of the animal kingdom.

Social and Emotional Learning

This week in Grade 5, students have been learning about personal coping strategies and how different strategies can help us manage challenging situations, difficult emotions and everyday problems. Students explored the difference between productive and unproductive coping strategies and discussed healthy ways to respond when things feel difficult. They also reflected on strategies that work for them, such as talking to someone they trust, taking a break, practising positive self-talk and engaging in enjoyable activities.

Adventure awaits in AUSLAN! This fortnight, the Year 5 cohort has been exploring the signs and vocabulary associated with going on a nature hike. Students have been learning how to communicate about the natural world and the things they might encounter along the way, including mushrooms, rivers, trees, flowers, animals, and other features of the environment. Through interactive activities and signing practice, students have been building their AUSLAN vocabulary and confidence while developing their ability to communicate about familiar experiences and the world around them. It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort enthusiastically embracing their learning and supporting one another as they practise new signs.
