Year 2 News

Reading

During Weeks 6 and 7, our Year 2 students began exploring inferencing and learning how to use clues from the text and pictures, along with what they already know, to work out information that is not directly stated. In Week 7, students explored the shortlisted picture books for Book Week. They read a different book each day and completed a book review, sharing and explaining our opinions about each story. It was wonderful to see students engaging with the stories and confidently sharing their thoughts and ideas.

Writing

During Weeks 6 and 7, our Year 2 students have been busy developing their writing skills. In Week 6, students completed a persuasive piece of writing about their favourite sport or hobby, focusing on using interesting ideas and convincing language to encourage their readers to become interested in their chosen activity. In Week 7, we began exploring information reports, learning how to find and share factual information about animals. This learning links closely with our current Inquiry topic of habitats, allowing students to combine their writing skills with their growing knowledge of animals and their environments.

During Weeks 6 and 7, our Year 2 students have been exploring data and length. Students collected data using tally marks and represented their findings in graphs, investigating topics such as favourite colours, foods and sports. In Week 7, we began learning about length, using informal units such as hands, feet, blocks and other objects to measure different items. The students particularly enjoyed the hands-on activities and opportunities to explore measurement in practical ways.

Inquiry

During Weeks 6 and 7, our Year 2 students have been learning all about habitats and why they are important for animals to survive, find food, water and shelter. Students explored different types of habitats and developed their understanding of how animals are suited to the environments in which they live. In Week 7, students began working in small groups to plan their habitat dioramas, choosing an animal and its habitat and thinking carefully about the features they will need to include. Students are excited to bring their plans to life and create their own habitat dioramas.

Book Week Parade

What a fantastic time we had celebrating Book Week at CPS! Our Year 2 students loved dressing up as their favourite book characters and sharing their love of reading with the school community. It was wonderful to see the creativity, excitement and effort that went into all the amazing costumes. The CPS Book Week Parade was certainly a highlight of the week, with so many wonderful characters coming to life!
