What a Great Day for Tassie - Victory for the Hobart Hurricanes

What a great year for Tassie Cricket – Hurricanes Premiership (Monday 27 February 2025)

St Virgil’s connections to this memorable event.

Caleb Jewell  (svc 2009-13) with 76 runs from 49 balls to win Man of the Match in the game that confirmed the Hurricanes would finish on top of the ladder and secure home finals. And scored 40 (41) in the Qualifying Final and held up his end in the Grand Final, farming the strike in a 109-run partnership with Man of the Match, Mitch Owen, who blasted 108 off 42 balls.

Riley Meredith – not on OV but is the son of the late Dale Meredith (svc 1975-78 dec. 2007), and nephew of Ross (svc 1979-82) and Dennis (svc 1978-85). Riley attended MacKillop College. He was Man of the Match in the Qualifying Final with figures of 2/34 and 3/27 in the 3/27 Grand Final.

Nathan Ellis, captain of the Hobart Hurricanes, moved from Sydney in 2019 with the hope of securing a cricket contact with Tasmania. Whilst performing at the local level, he worked at St Virgil’s as a TA.  He did gain a contract with Tasmania and the Hurricanes and has since represented Australia in the white ball form of the game, as well as being contracted to play in India’s IPL. An outstanding young man with a remarkable story.

Also part of the Hurricanes celebration were Dominic Baker (svc 1983 - 88), CEO of Cricket Tasmania, and former OVA President Zac Piesse, who is the Media and Public Relations Manager at Cricket Tasmania.

PS. Caleb Jewell’s form continued into his next state representative game with a ‘man-of-the-match’ performance of 105 runs (not out) in the ODI match against Victoria on 13 February.
