School Cross Country
On a very warm last day of Term 1, we held our school cross country at the Bairnsdale Racing Club. With the senior boys starting off the day with a 5km run, it soon became apparent that the students would be challenged by the vastness of the course and its challenging surfaces. None the less, as with all challenging situations, we see the absolute best come out of our students. Well done Yianni on a great run to take out 1st place in the 17-20yo age group and Cooper, 1st in the 16yo 5km run.
With the temperature warming up, the rest of the age groups competed over the 3km course, taking in one lap of the gravel trotting track then moving across to the main grass track in the thick grass. Simply taking the start line to this event is commendable, but to watch the competitors push themselves along in tough conditions was very encouraging and they should be very happy with their achievement.
Congratulations to the following winners:
13yo girls – Matilda 13yo boys – Hugh
14yo girls – Lola 14yo boys – Cooper
15yo girls – Georgia 14yo boys – Hayden
16yo girls – Lisa 17-20yo girls - Dee
State Swimming Championships
We would like to celebrate Cooper for competing at the State Swimming Championships last Thursday at MSAC Albert Park. Cooper competed in 3 races on the day and positioned in the following, 50m freestyle – 6th, 200m freestyle – 6th and 50m butterfly – 5th. It is with great admiration, the dedication to the sport and amount of training that has gone into qualifying and competing at this level, a fantastic effort Cooper, well done!
State Gymkhana
The 2026 Horseland Victoria Interschool State Championships, featuring equestrian gymkhana games, showjumping, and dressage, were held April 8–12, 2026, at Boneo Park. Feb 1, 2026. One very talented year 7 student, Mabel, competed in the Show Hunter Intermediate and these were her results:
Led Class 15th out of 52
Rider Class 12th out of 52
Ridden Class 9th out of 52
As a school, her points alone set Bairnsdale Secondary as 127 out of 190 schools. Personally, she sat 177 out of 400 riders.
In her Preliminary Intermediate Dressage her goal was to remember the tests independently - that is 2 rides of 5 mins long. She did such an amazing job and was successful in both tests with over 100 competitors. She represented the school with such pride and happiness. An amazing effort and a great experience - well done Mabel!
East Gippsland Year 7, Intermediate and Senior boys Aussie Rules Football
What an amazing way for our Interschool AFL teams to spend the day, with 3 games in perfect conditions at the Bairnsdale City Oval. Up against Nagle in all 3 games, Year 7 boys kicked the day off with some slick skills looking all the part in what was a dominant performance. Winning 87 to 24, the group will now compete at regional level in Traralgon on 20th May. It was great to have our Intermediate and Senior teams step up and support the younger team in a great display of leadership.
For the Intermediate and Senior games, the opposition were a lot harder to navigate, coming unstuck to lose both games. It was quite notable that we put in our second, third and fourth efforts in throughout the day, not shrugging our shoulders or spirits.
Thank you to all that contribute to running a big event such as this – coaches, field and boundary umpires, water boys, runners, timers, goalies and parents for supporting the school sports program.
