Year 1–6 students learned about Hinamatsuri (the Doll Festival), which is celebrated every year on March 3rd in Japan. It is a special day when families wish for the health and happiness of their daughters by displaying traditional dolls that represent the Emperor and Empress, along with other decorative dolls and ornaments.
Year 1 and 2 students made the Emperor and Empress using origami, while students in the other year levels learned how to write some hiragana and kanji characters related to the festival.
There were many great discussions about the similarities and differences between Japanese and Australian customs, and it was wonderful to see students showing curiosity and making connections between Japanese culture and their own experiences.
