From the Year 2 Classroom

Welcome back to Term 2!
It has been a wonderful start, filled with plenty of laughter and meaningful learning. We’re looking forward to another exciting term ahead, with special events including our Mother’s Day celebrations, an excursion to Wangaratta for a theatre production, and our school Athletics Carnival. We love seeing so many students eating fresh fruit every day. We ask, where possible, that it comes in a separate container so it can fit on our desks.
We are pleased to welcome Lochie Forge to Sacred Heart Primary School for the next two weeks as he completes his teaching placement in 2M. We’re excited to have you with us, Lochie! We also hope Mrs Bolton is enjoying her long service leave, and we look forward to welcoming her back in a fortnight.
In Literacy, we have been exploring the spelling rule of doubling the consonant when a short vowel sound comes before adding “ing,” a tricky concept for many of us! Our focus tricky words have been alright, always, said, already, their, and they.
In Reading, we have been developing our comprehension skills by making connections—personal, text-to-text, and world connections. In Writing, students have been researching nature topics, locating subheadings, and recording information to create an information report. We are excited to begin publishing our work this week.
In Maths, we have been practising addition and subtraction of up to three-digit numbers using strategies such as bridging to ten, partitioning, counting on, and adding multiples of ten. This week, we will begin our unit on Place Value, focusing on identifying, representing, locating, and ordering four-digit numbers.
In Religion, we have been learning about Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. We attended Parish Mass last Friday, and the students’ behaviour was exemplary. We are incredibly proud of the way they participated through reading, singing, and responding. Well done, Year 2!
In Inquiry, we are learning about our local community. We began by identifying where we live, as well as exploring the states and territories of Australia and their capital cities. We have also been learning about our local community of Yarrawonga/Mulwala and the surrounding towns, what makes a community, and what we love most about living here.
We congratulate our award winners from last week:
2B- Harvey Ednie and Elke Handreck
2F- Rex McVicar, Bobby Loechel and Naseebjot Thind
2M- Ziggy Brady and Xavier Brooks
We wish all our mothers and special mother figures a wonderful Mother’s Day this Sunday. We look forward to celebrating with you on Friday at our Mother’s Day Liturgy, followed by morning tea and a classroom activity after recess.
