From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade 1 families! Welcome to Term 2! We have loved seeing our amazing Grade 1s pick up where they left off and we have been so proud of how they have settled straight back into another term of learning. We have been so lucky with some beautiful weather, but it is starting to get a bit chilly, so please ensure your child’s jumper is clearly labelled.

We would like to welcome our new LSO (Learner Support Officer), Miss Lily Cameron. Lily will be working with us in the Grade 1 space. How lucky are we?

We are also very excited to have a student teacher, Miss Eden Gyles working in 1H. We know she will love working with the children in 1H.

Readers- Please remember to bring in home readers on a Friday. Children should be reading two books a week, focusing on accuracy and fluency. Each night, we aim to add more voice and expression using the punctuation to help. In the back of the book are our Tricky Words- mother, brother and father are our new words this week!

📝Literacy-

We have kicked off the term with some fun learning about homophones. Homophones are words that are usually spelt differently and have different meanings. Eg sun & son. We applied this learning to our Writing lessons and wrote some super sentences. We also explored the parts of a story, such as the ‘action’ the ‘solution’ and the ‘consequences.’  We created a plan for our own story using this learning. We will also continue to revise nouns, proper nouns, adjectives and conjunctions (joining words) and add them to our writing.

⭐Graphs, Digraphs & Trigraphs we are learning:

oa/ow- we know when this sound in the middle of a word we usually use /oa/ and when we hear this sound at the end of the word, we usually use /ow/

/y/ as in cry- we know when we hear this sound at the end of a word, we use /y/

/igh/ as in light- we know this sound can be used in the middle and end of words

⭐ Tricky Words we are learning:

➕➖Maths-

We have begun the term by revising our learning about Place Value, Friends of Ten and Number Bonds. We have also continued to partition numbers in lots of different ways. We know we can represent a number using pictures, tens frames, tallies, number sentences, number bonds and we can even use words!

💙Religion – Pentecost-

Our Religion lessons have focused on the story of Pentecost. Pentecost is a very old celebration that goes back well before Jesus’ time. The Jewish people celebrated many festivals and Pentecost was one of them. It celebrated the wheat harvest. The main point of the Christian festival was to give thanks for the gift of food and life given by God.

🌍 Inquiry- History-

Our Inquiry lessons have focused on things that have happened in our past. We have enjoyed listening to various stories that recount past events. We’ve discussed how our families celebrate special memories, and we’ve heard many lovely stories.

📆 Important dates-

Friday 8th May- Mother's Day Liturgy, morning tea and class activity.

29th May- Cross Country

Wednesday 10th June- YOU and ME and the Land of Lost Things- Performing Arts Excursion Wangaratta

Wishing all of our beautiful mums/nans/grandmas and special mother figures a beautiful Mother’s Day on Sunday. 💜

Take care and kind regards,

Kristy, Sarah, Kayte, Nikki, Kellie & Lily 😊
