The New Chapter

Imagine you are sitting with Jesus’ friends for a moment. They had seen, with their very own eyes, things that today could be described as ‘incredible’...

Jesus’ love for people, his message of forgiveness, the miracles, his persecution and ultimate sacrifice through his death, followed soon after by his resurrection... Most recently, they had seen Jesus leave in quite an extraordinary way... but not before tasking them with a very tall order... to tell the world of God’s love, demonstrated by what they had seen and heard. But, on a comforting note, they wouldn’t be doing it alone. They were to stay put, until they had received ‘The gift of the Holy Spirit’.

As they prayed, I wonder what emotions surged within them... I wonder what conversations were shared between them... They were encountering the first days of a new chapter, one without Jesus, their deeply loved leader and friend.

On Wednesday our Worship Actors, in the role of the disciples, pondered such things...

And then it happened... the sound like the rushing wind filled the room and tongues of fire descended on their heads... They were filled with the Holy Spirit... Emboldened, they were suddenly able to speak in other languages... They were able to share the good news of Jesus to visitors, from a range of different lands, who were visiting the city at the time.

Barriers that had kept people apart had been removed... the message of hope was being shared... bringing people together... the news that they were loved and being given the invitation to ‘belong’ in God’s family.

That day would have indeed been spectacular to witness, but don’t worry, we haven’t missed out. The Holy Spirit is still here with us, helping us in our connection with God and relationships with others.

Holy Spirit is our comforter, helper and advocate (paraclete: one who comes alongside to help), our teacher and guide to name just a few.

Just like those people of long ago, we have the opportunity to live each day, equipped and supported in whatever we may face...

God bless you in the adventure that awaits!

Can you help?

We are truly blessed to have wonderful people share their time and love with others here at Good Shepherd. It is a key factor that helps to make this place feel like home. A big thank you to the mum who stepped into this role and served our community in this way last term, but she has let me know that her work circumstances have changed and she is no longer able to be here at the required time. I would love to hear from others who might be able to serve in this manner. If this is you, please come and have a chat (over a coffee perhaps) or email me here

Love to hear from you soon!
