Welcome to Term 4
Welcome back to Term 4. It’s hard to believe we’re already in the final term of the year, and what a busy one it promises to be!
This term, students will continue exploring wonderful books, developing their research skills, organising their Google Drive folders in preparation for Secondary, and finishing the year with some lovely Christmas stories.
This Week’s Reads
Kindergarten – Summer Days and the Beach
Kindergarten is getting into summer early this term, exploring stories about the beach, sunshine and warmer weather. Last week they enjoyed Sing Me the Summer by Jane Godwin and this week will be reading Granny Grommet and Me by Diane Wolfer, a fun story about a grandmother who helps her grandson overcome his fear of the ocean and discover the wonders of snorkelling and rock pools.
Students have enjoyed sharing stories about their own grannies and designing some very colourful surfboards! An interesting fact: the book was inspired by the real-life ‘Granny Grommets’, a group of surfing grandmothers from Albany in Western Australia. You can read more about these inspiring ladies here.
Stage 1 – Heads and Tails
Stage 1 students are enjoying John Canty’s Heads and Tails series, using clues and beautiful illustrations to guess which animal is hiding on the next page. Some of the clues have certainly kept us guessing!
Over the coming weeks, students will research an animal of their choice and write their own clues to create a class book. It’s been lovely hearing about their favourite animals and discovering just how much they already know!
Stage 2 – Reading for Pleasure
This term, Stage 2 is focusing on reading for enjoyment and discovering what makes a good book for each reader.
This week, student will complete a survey, sharing what they enjoy reading, where they like to read and their thoughts about reading at home. Their responses have been interesting, and I’ll be using this feedback to help guide future book purchases for our library.
We’d love to hear from families, too! If you have a few minutes, please complete our reading survey and share your thoughts. Your feedback will help us better understand reading habits and interests beyond the classroom.
You can access the survey here.
Stage 3 – Author Study: Alan Gratz
Stage 3 is beginning the term with an author study of Alan Gratz, followed by the creation of book recommendation posters.
Gratz is a popular author of historical fiction for young readers, particularly stories exploring war, conflict and survival. This week, we're starting by reading an excerpt from Resist, a historical fiction story set during D-Day. You can view the fantastic book trailer here.
Exciting New Reads Hitting the Library Shelves
There are plenty of new books arriving in the library! Thanks to our CSO Standing Orders, Scholastic credits earned and some great student suggestions, we have a steady supply of fresh reads to enjoy.
From the latest graphic novels and popular fiction series to fascinating non-fiction titles, there’s something for everyone. Keep an eye on our new arrivals displays, as there are many more books on the way.
Term 4 Scholastic Book Club
The final Scholastic Book Club catalogue for the year is heading home today. This is the biggest catalogue of the year, with plenty of great books and Christmas specials. It’s a lovely opportunity to stock up on holiday reading or perhaps organise a Christmas gift. If you're purchasing a surprise, simply select the ‘gift’ option when ordering online, and we’ll arrange for collection from the school office.
Orders close Wednesday, 28 October (Week 3) and should arrive within approximately two weeks. Please refer to the catalogue for ordering details.
Book Club is completely optional, but every order helps our library earn credit towards purchasing new books. Thank you to all the families who continue to support this program!
SORA Books of the Week
This week’s SORA eBooks celebrate Media Literacy Week, with a great selection of books and resources to help students from Kindergarten to Year 12 think critically and navigate the digital world.
