Years F-6 

It is hard to believe that Term 3 is complete! What a wonderful time we have had in F-6 despite some very cold weather. It has been great to see the students learning and being excited about sharing what they have been doing in class. Outside of the regular classroom Foundation Celebrated 100 Days of School; our old playground came down and the new one went up; students participated in the English and Mathematics Competitions; we won the Calder Athletics; celebrated Book Week, saw ‘A Little bit of blue’, saw the Melbourne Cup and of course displayed our Artworks in a Gallery. Melbourne Cup Visit

We went to see the Melbourne Cup with the hobby horses the Men’s Shed made for us to decorate, and Oscar got to hold the cup! 

Grand Opening of the Charlton College F-6 Art Gallery at Mallee Creatives

A glorious evening was had at the Opening of our Art at the Mallee Creatives Gallery. Almost all students and their families were in attendance, along with other staff and community members. The students began by singing, “Home among the Gum Trees", our Captains, Alodia and Cody gave a brief overview about our artwork, themed, “Australia: Our Land, Our Story, Our Future.” Prior to the doors being opened and everyone viewing the display. The students were very keen to spot their work and show it off to their family members. It was a little busy and noisy to listen to the recordings of the students explaining how they created the pieces, however visitors will be able to enjoy this experience. Many thanks to all the families who came along to support the children. We hope you have all managed to go back while the display is up. 

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences

On Tuesday just gone, it was great to have the majority of our parents and students in to talk about how each student is progressing with their classroom teacher. We thank you all for taking the time to do this, as the students love to share their learnings, and if there is some little way that school and home can work together to support your children, this is a great time to identify that opportunity.

This week we also said goodbye to Mr (Chris) Condon as a teacher. We thank him immensely for coming to work at the school this term. The Year 5 & 6 students have really enjoyed having him, and are missing him already. We hope to see Chris back in Grandparent mode again very soon. 

Happy Holidays

I wish all students, staff and their families a very enjoyable break. I would like to specially thank all the staff who have supported our students to make these opportunities possible, especially those who went above and beyond to bring the gallery display to fruition. Hopefully the sun continues to shine, so we can all enjoy some fresh air and come back refreshed ready for the final sprint to the end of the year. The term starting with a bang with Stomp Dance sessions during week one. If parents and friends would like to write in their diary that the performance will take place on the Friday afternoon of week 1, as it is always a great watch. The Charlton Art Show is also on during the holidays, so we will take a look at that on return. The Charlton Show will also be on after week 2.

Book Recommendation: 

Ned recommended a book that I read during my childhood, The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton. 

Ned describes this book as an adventure and fantasy book. The story is set in the forest, in a house and the magical faraway tree. There are many characters in the story, including Bessy, Moon Face, Mr Whatshisname, Franny, Dame Washalot, Angry Pixie, Jo, Squirrel, Silkie and Sauceman Man. The story goes along the lines of, the children move to a new house, behind it is a forest with a magical tree with magical folks and a hatch that opens to a new land everyday. Goblins take over the tree and mine the forbidden diamond mine, which could kill the tree. Ned believes Grade 1 and above would enjoy this as a shared story, and he rates it 4 and a half stars. 

Tyson recommended Chippy Chasers by Sam Cotton.

This book is a graphic novel full of adventure. The tory takes place at the wharf, dumpster and the beach. Tyson could tell us the main characters are Stanley, Stacey, Steve-o and Wormy. In the story, Stanley, Stacey and Wormy go to the dumpster to find Steve-p so they can taste Brock’s delicious hot, salty chippies. Tyson gives this book 4 out of 5 stars. 

Current Affair: 

Alyson reported on the Nepal Flood Rescue, and in particular Australia’s involvement, in sending rescuers to the area to help search for missing person, including Australians. Three facts that Alyson found interesting were that they have been finding Australians, they’ve made contact with their families and they are going to send more rescue crews to assist. Alyson believes this event is important because there are missing Australians. The question Alyson would like to ask is have they given them supplies to send over. 

Eli reported on the NFL game that was held in Melbourne between San Francisco and Los Angles. It was the first NFL game to be played in Australia. San Francisco is the first team to win an NFL game in Australia. Three things Eli found interesting were that the crowd was a massive 100 021, this was three seats short of a full crowd and the results were 27 to 7 in San Francisco’s favour.  It is important as it was the first game of NFL to be played in Australia, they usually only play their games in America. A question Eli would like to ask is, was it a good experience to play the game in Melbourne?
