It has been another exciting and hands-on term in science! Students have explored a range of topics including the classification of living things, forces and motion, the cardiovascular system, genetics and DNA. 

Students investigated how scientists classify different species and learnt how forces interact with one another through practical activities, including designing and testing their own race tracks. During our study of the cardiovascular system, students examined the structure and function of the heart and circulatory system, culminating in a sheep heart dissection where they compared the anatomy of a sheep's heart to a human heart. 

Our genetics unit sparked plenty of discussion about DNA, inherited traits and how living things are formed. Students applied their understanding by creating their own unique dinosaur species, selecting and justifying traits from a range of animals based on the DNA they would extract and combine. 

To finish the semester, students also explored changes in states of matter and heat transfer by making homemade ice cream using salt and ice. It has been fantastic to see students actively engaging in investigations, asking thoughtful questions and developing their scientific thinking through hands-on learning experiences. 

 

 

SUSTAINABILITY

Students in the Term 2 Sustainability class have continued their work at the Mullinmur Billabong, focusing on the establishment of aquatic plants.

In addition to creating and maintaining the floating plant rafts, students have now begun planting directly into the billabong floor. To protect these new plantings from European carp, they have installed protective cages around selected areas, giving the plants the best chance to establish and thrive.

So far, the aquatic plants are growing well, with the project showing encouraging early results.

 

 

VEX

This term, students have begun their journey into the exciting world of VEX Robotics, developing skills in coding, problem-solving, and engineering design through hands-on STEM learning experiences.

Students started by exploring VEXcode VR, where they learned the fundamentals of coding by programming a virtual robot to complete a variety of challenges. Through these activities, students developed their understanding of sequencing, logical thinking, and debugging while building confidence in a supportive digital environment.

As the term progressed, students were introduced to the physical VEX IQ and VEX V5 robotics system. They explored robot components, learned basic building techniques, and began working collaboratively to construct and program robots to complete simple challenges.

It has been wonderful to see students embrace new learning opportunities, demonstrate resilience when faced with challenges, and develop their teamwork skills. We look forward to continuing to build on these foundations next term as students take on more complex coding and robotics challenges.
