Literacy:

Over the past fortnight, Prep students have been busy developing their phonics and reading skills. They learned to recognise and read the sounds and letters ‘j’, ‘w’ and ‘v’, and practised using these sounds to read and spell words such as jog, wet, win and pav. They also continued to build their confidence with blending sounds together to read and spell words independently. For their tricky words, students focused on writing the high-frequency words ‘with’ and ‘all’. They practised recognising these words quickly and using them correctly when reading and writing sentences.

The Grade 1/2's this past fortnight have been learning to recognise and read the sounds and letter patterns ‘or’ and ‘ar’. They have been practising identifying these sounds in words and applying their knowledge when reading and spelling words such as jar, sort, March, sailor and darkness.

Students worked hard to hear the different sounds within words and use their phonics knowledge to support accurate spelling. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence as they apply these skills when reading and writing independently.

Writing in the junior room has had the students learning about information reports and exploring how these texts are structured to share factual information with a reader. Students focused on identifying and using subheadings to organise information into clear sections, making our reports easy to read and understand.

They created their own information reports about whales and hairy-nosed wombats. They enjoyed learning interesting facts about these animals and used their knowledge to write informative sections under appropriate subheadings. It was fantastic to see students developing their research, writing and organisational skills while creating their own informative texts.

Maths:

The Junior students have been learning about shapes and their attributes. They explored how to recognise and describe simple shapes by noticing features such as their sides and corners. Students also practised subitising, quickly recognising the number of shapes in a collection without needing to count each one individually.

Students also developed their understanding of positional language by describing where shapes were located in relation to other objects. Students used words such as above, below, beside, between, in front of, behind and next to to explain the position of different shapes.
