Kids Corner

The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter features:
- Extracts from some of our Year 6 learners as they demonstrate how they achieved the Learning Intention of “To deepen my understanding of explanation texts”
- Xavier and Akashara (Year 5) have written a letter to their future self.
I trust you enjoy them just as much as I have:
How do bats fly in the dark – Kimaya (Year 6).
Bats are not blind. Bats can see, but hardly.
Crawling in the quiet dark cave lies bats. Cunning bats lay ready to attack! Ready to attack the serene calm that hangs thick in the air.
Bats send the quiet shrill of ultrasonic sound that vibrates through the walls. Bouncing and returning back to the bat. This fascinating text is going to explain it all!
Bats are not blind. They can see but have sensitive eyes. Sensitive eyes that can see poor light conditions. Since bats spend most of their time in caves, bats need a way to find food and travel around the cave. Unlike humans, bats don’t have sharp and colourful vision.
The amazing lifecycle of a dolphin – Sahana.
Down under the sea, a tiny dolphin lives. An extraordinary sea creature waiting to hatch. Like a baby trying to kick and get out to explore the world. As it has waited 17 long months, finally to meet its mother. This fascinating process is called gestation, a biological quest where baby dolphins make their way to become mature dolphins and something incredible.
What is gestation? Well, this is the first incredible phase of a dolphin’s life cycle. This period lasts up to 17 months, whereas some last up to 12 months. The dolphin is laid by a female dolphin.
Placental development. What does that long word mean? When the dolphin is born it is known as a calf. This is the second stage, and it is where the calf starts to get nourishment from its mother so it can breathe.
How seasons change – Emilia.
Have you ever wondered why weather changes throughout the year? As the months go by, shifts are noticed in temperature, daylight and the nature of the beauty around us. These changes mark the arrival of the four seasons – winter, spring, summer and autumn. Each season has its own special characteristics from blooming flowers in spring to falling leaves in autumn. These patterns repeat every year and are part of Earth’s natural cycle.
There are many different factors as to how seasons change, but the Earth’s axis is a big part of the way it works. The earth’s axis is the position of Earth; this causes different parts of the Earth varying amount of sunlight throughout the year. When Australia is tilted towards the sun, it gets more direct sunlight making it summer with warmer weather and longer days. At the same time, the opposite side of the Earth is titled away from the sun, receiving less sunlight and experiencing winter with cooler weather and shorter days.
A letter to my future self:
Dear Akshara,
I’m writing this letter to you in the future. This is my message to you in the future, and I strongly believe that these are important to shape you.
Please, love yourself and accept yourself for the person you are. You are great the way you are and don’t need to change anything.
Be yourself and let your own personality shine through. You don’t need to try and be someone else, or like someone else. Have inspiration, but still make sure you don’t become another person. You are you and they are them, so be YOU.
Believe in your dreams. Believe they can come true. If you still would do anything to become successful in singing, then be positive and believe. If you don’t believe in your own dreams, how will they come true? It’s up to you to make it happen.
Love your family until you die. Not until they die, until you die. Never take them for granted. They are the most important people in your life. You must respect them, you must, must must.
Honour your mum. She is like your queen, never disrespect her, ever, and treat her better than anyone. Respect her and love her with your life.
Dear Zavier,
I’m writing this letter for me in the future. I’m still young, 11 years old to be precise. I want to be a good person when I grow up, so I am writing this to give you some advice to you when you’re older.
Always admit to your mistakes because you will always have a weight on your heart when you don’t forgive or say sorry to someone, once you have you will feel a relief and all that weight going away.
Remember that your family are the most important people in your life. They are the reason you are standing on this planet at the moment and especially your mum and dad. You must always respect them under any circumstances or situations and keep in mind that they truly love and care about you. Visit them regularly, they really enjoy seeing your face and if in any doubt of their care just remember what they did for you when you were young and how they raised you.
Keep yourself and your body safe and healthy so you can grow up and be happy with yourself. Keep healthy so you can live long for your children and care for them as much as your parents cared for you. Stay healthy for all you’ve got to live for like grandchildren or experience stuff you haven’t before. Live long to travel the world and explore to place you’ve never seen, the world is amazing and you have to see other areas you will enjoy.
Feed yourself with kindness, people deserve to be treated with kindness no matter who they are. Surround yourself with people who you look up to and be like. Be kind to not only humans but also animals and plants. Animals and plants have feelings and emotions as well. Be kind to the environment, they are the reason you are living here alongside your family.
When you do something do it properly, if you eat, eat like it’s your last time. If you work, work like you’ve never done before. You never know when your time on earth will end so live every minute of every hour of every day with happiness because your time will eventually end.
Remember that your biggest problems have big sacrifices and big solutions but don’t ever let that stop you from doing what you’ve always wanted to. Follow your dreams no matter what since you have one life and you should live it to the fullest. Your dreams matter no matter what anyone says and you should always try to reach it.
Always remember to be 1 percent better every day even if you improve slowly, it still counts. Try to be better for other people and for yourself and you and everyone around you deserved to be cared for.
Be yourself, not anyone else. You are you and they are them. You are made for a purpose and it’s not for copying other people.
