Boarding

Earlier this term, it was an absolute pleasure to celebrate our Year 12 boarders at a special dinner at Illawarra, honouring the remarkable young women who have contributed so much to the spirit and culture of our boarding community. The evening provided an opportunity to reflect on their boarding journeys, celebrate their achievements and recognise the lasting impact they have had through their friendship, leadership and commitment to others.
Our ten Year 12 boarders have helped make Illawarra a true home away from home. Through their kindness, humour, compassion and leadership, they have fostered a culture where girls feel welcomed, supported, and valued. They have demonstrated that a strong community is built not only through significant milestones, but also through the everyday acts of friendship and inclusion that make boarding life so special.
For many of these students, the transition to boarding was far from easy. Leaving family, adapting to a new environment, and learning to navigate life away from home brought significant challenges. Yet, we have had the privilege of watching them grow into confident and caring young women. Their ability to embrace the opportunities of boarding life while balancing the demands of Year 12 has been truly inspiring.
A highlight of the evening was hearing our Boarding Co-Captains reflect on the memories that have shaped their time at Illawarra. As they so beautifully shared, 'This house would be nothing more than empty corridors and rooms without your (fellow boarders) laughter and joyous presence to make it feel like a home.'
Their words captured the strong sense of belonging that underpins the boarding experience at St Catherine's.
The evening was filled with gratitude as students reflected on the friendships they have formed and the support they have received along the way. It was clear that Illawarra has become much more than a place to live during the school week. It has become a family.
As our Year 12 boarders look ahead to the exciting opportunities that await them beyond school, we want them to know how deeply valued they are. While they will be greatly missed, their legacy will remain part of Illawarra for years to come. We thank them for the joy, warmth, leadership and spirit they have brought to our community and wish them every success and happiness in the future.
