Year 5/6 Team News

with Christina, Edan, Molly, Melati, Laura & Matt

Hello Year 5/6 families,

What an incredibly fast term it has been and what an incredible amount work we have managed to squeeze in! We are very proud of our 5/6 efforts across the term and hope they enjoy a well-deserved rest.

Term 4 is always a very big term for Grade 5/6. When we return to school we will be completing our final foci for the year, before launching revision of the year's concepts. On both sides of camp, we will have various assessments across all learning areas. We suggest students keep up their daily reading and practising of timestables over the break.

Suggestions for holiday homework:

  • Daily reading: use of novels, newspaper articles, Kids News Online, visits to Hobsons Bay Library etc.
  • Timestables Revision: writing them out, reciting them, verbal quizzing
  • Maths Concepts: My Numeracy, telling the time (analogue & digital), reading maps (Melways), cooking for measurements and time, shopping budgets, creating a schedule, cooking with fractions, calculating distances, create a number of the day... (anything fun involving numbers!)
  • Board games: any with dice, money, points, reading questions, asking others questions, card games etc.

What's Coming up in the Classroom in Term 4:

Reading: In Weeks 1 and 2, students will be looking at picture story narratives and studying what makes an engaging text for an audience in preparation for their buddy book planning. We will also launch our term text, non-fiction book "The First Scientists."

Writing: In Weeks 1 and 2, students will begin by preparing a survey for their grade prep or 1 buddy to help with the planning and drafting stage of their buddy book. They will use the planning format, Somebody Wanted To But So Then to ensure their narrative has all key elements.

Numeracy: In Week 1, students will be looking at shape, 2D shapes and 3D objects and their properties. They will also revisit their timestables test to review their progress with speed and accuracy. In Week 2, we will begin out unit on BODMAS (Order of Operations) and begin to introduce the concepts of algebra. This is a large unit and will continue to expand into Week 3 and 4.

Inquiry: In Week 2, we will begin out unit with a launch into the term's project. The focus on the unit will be on technology and innovation. This is a very hands-on and experimental unit that will allow students to work in groups to fulfill a brief. Stay tuned for more details next term!

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: Term 4 Pillar- Responsibility

In Weeks 1 and 2, Willy Kids are cooperative. We will look at what it means to be a responsible Willy Kid and ways in which we can support others by being a positive role model. In Respectful Relationships, students will look at stressors and ways to manage these in a responsible way.
