Mr Scott Reaper - Program Leader - Sport
Another term of Marist Sport has come to an end, with our Basketball, Tennis and Rugby League teams travelling to Padua College for the final round of the AIC season.
Our 1st V Basketball kicked off the weekend on Friday night in front of an electric atmosphere, with The Hive out in full force. The boys produced a fantastic performance to secure a 79–66 victory, finishing the season in equal second place alongside St Edmund’s and Villanova. Congratulations to the players and coaches, Mr Lymer and Mr Carroll, on a terrific season.
A big thank you to Mr Brown for his work coordinating the Basketball program throughout the season, Mr Moore for his support as a venue coordinator, and Mrs Soliman for organising and running the Internal Basketball Competition. Thank you also to all coaches, staff, students and families who contributed to the program throughout the term.
Our 1st IV Tennis finished their season in impressive fashion, recording a dominant 8–0 victory over Padua. The Opens finished the season in fourth place, while the overall Tennis program achieved an outstanding second place in the AIC aggregate. Thank you to Mr Liam Webb for coaching the 1st IV this season, Mrs Ritchie for her support in coordinating the Tennis program, and all our coaches for their time, commitment and efforts throughout the season.
Our 1st XIII Rugby League faced a strong and disciplined Padua side in a closely contested final-round encounter. The boys fought hard right until the final siren but unfortunately went down 16–12. The result saw the team finish second overall, while the Rugby League program finished third in the AIC aggregate. Congratulations to the boys on a fantastic season and the way they represented the College each week. Thank you to Mr Mabey for coordinating the Rugby League program and Mr Winchester and Mr Grealy for their commitment to coaching the 1st XIII this year.
Congratulations to all students who represented the Blue and Gold across Basketball, Tennis and Rugby League this term. Thank you to our coaches, coordinators, staff, families and supporters for the time and commitment they have given throughout the season. Your continued support plays an important role in making Marist Sport such a positive experience for our boys.
We wish Mr Graham, Mr Prole, Mr Martin and the entire AIC Track and Field team all the very best as they prepare to compete at the AIC Track and Field Championships in Week 1 of Term 4 on Thursday and Friday. The boys have put in a tremendous amount of work throughout the season, and we look forward to seeing them proudly represent the Blue and Gold.

Marist Track and Field | AIC Practice Meet #3
Even with Year 9 Camp and a week of exams, it was fantastic to see another solid turnout of students at QSAC last week for our third AIC Practice Meet.
Windy conditions made things challenging, particularly for those running into the headwind in the long jump or down the finishing straight. Once again, these conditions provide valuable experience and preparation as we move closer to the AIC Championship, where conditions can vary across the two days of competition.
A big thank you to our wonderful coaching team, who continue to guide the boys through these challenges.
Some good performances: Some of the best performances from AIC Practice Meet #3 included –

Marist Track and Field | Pathways
With the 2026 AIC Championship fast approaching and families looking beyond early October, there are plenty of options to stay involved in Track and Field for the remainder of 2026 and beyond.
Over the past few seasons, we have had students follow a range of different pathways to remain involved in Track and Field competitions.
Some students will continue training for upcoming State and National events, while others will focus on training and preparation for the following season. Below, Mr Martin and Mr Prole have outlined some pathway options to help families better understand the opportunities available.
OPTION 1 - QLD ATHLETICS ALL SCHOOLS CHAMPS (Qualifier for All Schools Nationals)
As a pathway to further develop your athletics, a number of students may wish to compete at the Queensland All Schools Championships (October 1–4), with the opportunity to qualify for Nationals in Perth in December if you finish in the Top 2. There is no pre-qualifying time or distance required for the Queensland All Schools Championships; simply register, pay the entry fee and compete in your Marist T&F uniform.
All keen athletes between 12–17 years can compete if you register as per the instructions below. Note that for this meet, 12-year-olds will compete in the 13 Years age group.
Steps to register as follows –
STEP 1: Get a Membership -
Register as a Base Member ($0 member fee, No Club) OR register with a Club (e.g. Ashgrove Rangers – different membership level and club fees apply).
Cost - $32 per event at States for non-members, or $10–$22 per event with Platinum/Gold membership.
Link to Register: Queensland Athletics Membership
If you wish to compete in Perth in 2026 if you qualify, you should register with a club such as Ashgrove Rangers (member details below).
STEP 2: Register for the Queensland All Schools Titles
Link to Register: Queensland All Schools Titles Registration
NOTE - Entries close 9am Tuesday 22 September. There are no extensions to this deadline.
Competition Dates: Thu 1 - Sun 4 October
OPTION 2 - 2026 JUNIOR CLUB PATHWAY
For those wishing to enter the club season and potentially qualify for Nationals in April 2027, you can similarly register for membership with a club and compete at a range of pre-meets before the Queensland State Club Championships in March 2027. These meets will begin in late October 2026. Registering as a member in STEP 1 above will start the process.
Boys can qualify through entry standards. This can be a great incentive as it provides athletes with a clear time or distance to work towards. The main thing to note is that these championships begin at U14 level (or U13 in our school age-group system).
Australian Athletics Entry Standards
STEP 1: Get a Membership - Register as a Base Member (No Club) OR register with a Club (e.g. Ashgrove Rangers – base member fee + club fee).
Note that different levels of membership have different fees and options.

OPTION 3 - LITTLE ATHLETICS PATHWAY
For junior athletes in Years 5 and 6 in particular, Little Athletics can be a great introduction to competition and provides an opportunity to learn the basic movements and techniques before progressing with more specialised coaching in your preferred events. Arana Hills Little Athletics and The Gap Little Athletics are two nearby options for Marist athletes.
Arana Hills Little Athletics The Gap Little Athletics
OPTION 4 - Sunday Sessions
Most Sundays, Mr Martin and members of the coaching team will continue to offer off-season running, fitness, sprints and selected field events, depending on those attending. Except for some State Championship weekends and major meets, these sessions will continue throughout the year. They provide an opportunity to support your other sports while developing speed, fitness and athletic ability.
Students can also discuss training options for their preferred events with Mr Martin and Mr Prole, with guidance available on finding external coaches if required to progress further.
GENERAL QUERY - WHAT MEMBERSHIP DO I NEED?
If you have any questions about the above pathways, please contact Mr Martin at robin.martin@bigpond.com or Mr Thomas Prole at prolet@marash.qld.edu.au. They can step you through the process and assist with any questions from parents.
QLD Athletics All Schools Pathway | National All Schools Qualifier
For those pursuing representative pathways, the Queensland Athletics All Schools Championships will provide a qualification opportunity for the National All Schools Championships in Perth in December 2026.
The Queensland Athletics All Schools Championships will be held on the last weekend of the school holidays. All athletes aged 12–17 years are eligible to register and compete.
Those interested in pursuing this pathway are encouraged to register and participate. More information will follow, but please register early and speak with a Mr Martin or Mr Prole if you have any questions or concerns.
Please note: This pathway is separate from the Met North pathway to the Queensland Secondary Schools Championships in mid-October.

There were plenty of impressive performances across the weekend, highlighted by the 1st V finishing their season with a 79–66 victory, while the 3rd V and 4th V also secured convincing wins. Our younger teams produced some excellent results, including strong victories for our Year 5 cohort, 6C & 6D sides. Our secondary teams finished strongly with wins from 7D, 8C, 9B, 9C, 9D, 10B, 11A, 11B and 11C.
Round 7 brought another round of competitive AIC Basketball to a close. I would like to take this moment to thank all of the players and coaches for their incredible commitment throughout the term as well as all of those families who have supported the boys' week in and week out. Round 7 vs Padua
Last Friday night at Padua was definitely one to remember for our year 12’s final game. The Hive was buzzing and delivered one of the biggest atmospheres this year. Coming up against a young and hungry Padua team, we knew they would come out strong. We started the game well and got out to a 9-point lead early, but as we know, no lead is comfortable. Our jump shots weren’t falling in the second quarter and Padua saw a few go down; finding ourselves down 29 – 36 at the half. Yet again, I was impressed with how we didn’t panic, lifting the defensive urgency and putting more pressure on the rim, regaining the lead at the end of the third, 54 – 53. The boys were able to keep it rolling in the last, winning the quarter 25 – 13, with the final score 79 -66.
An exciting way to finish the AIC season. Finishing second on the ladder and being the only team to beat the eventual winners, Lauries, this group should be proud of their achievements. With a 5 – 2 record, this becomes Marist’s best result since 2018. Thank you again to the families, students and Marist community that supported the program this year. As the AIC season comes to a close, we turn to the final chapter of the 1st V season and move to Coomera, competing against the top schools in Queensland at CBSQ from Thursday to Sunday.

The scrum is an integral and unique part of Rugby Union. The contest between two well coached and well-conditioned packs is both compelling and exciting.
Effective scrummaging requires teamwork. Each individual must understand their role, how to be an effective scrummager, and how to achieve this as a member of a forward unit.
Whilst the rugby union scrum is a means of restarting play after a stoppage which has been caused, it is always necessary to ensure safety at all times is our key focus when forming scrums.
A key part of our rugby safety here at the College is educating and supporting students’ development. The Scrum Ready Conditioning Program will continue to take you through the journey of developing and conditioning individual body strength, control and shape.
