Year 5
Spotlight on Learning
Bethany Community
Dear Families,
It has been a busy and productive few weeks of learning in Year 5. Students have been working hard across all learning areas and showing great engagement in their lessons. In Religious Education, we have begun reflecting on the season of Lent and how it calls us to follow the mission of Jesus through kindness, service and care for others. We also look forward to the upcoming public holiday and hope families enjoy the opportunity to spend time together. Thank you for your continued support of our Year 5 learning community.
Our learning this week:
Religious Education:
In Religious Education, Year 5 students have been learning about the season of Lent and how it invites us to continue the mission of Jesus. Students explored how Lent helps us grow closer to God through prayer, reflection and acts of kindness. They have also been discussing how Jesus’ message connects to social justice, including respecting human rights, sharing resources and challenging inequality. Students reflected on practical ways they can live out Jesus’ mission in their own lives during Lent and how the Church continues this mission through service and action.
English
In English, Year 5 students have been developing their reading and writing skills. They practised handwriting with horizontal joins and improved their typing accuracy. In reading, students explored our class novel War Horse, responding to questions, building vocabulary and reading with fluency and expression. In writing, they focused on creating compound and complex sentences and planning persuasive texts with clear paragraphs while carefully editing their work.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, Year 5 students have been learning to find unknown numbers in multiplication and division equations by using inverse operations. They have also been solving problems involving perimeter, including finding the length of unknown sides in rectilinear compound shapes. These activities help students strengthen their problem-solving skills and deepen their understanding of number and measurement.
Integrated Studies
In Integrated Studies, Year 5 students have been learning about sustainability. They explored what sustainability means and discussed why it is important to care for our environment and resources. Students practised explaining the meaning of sustainability in their own words and considered simple ways people can help protect the planet for the future.
Social Emotional Learning:
In Social and Emotional Learning, Year 5 students have been learning that feelings can vary in strength and intensity. They have been expanding their vocabulary to better describe emotions and discussing how some feelings can be stronger or weaker than others in different situations. This learning helps students understand their emotions and communicate how they feel more clearly.
AusIan
In Auslan, students have been learning that some verb signs can show meaning through movement and direction. They practised using the sign LOOK, changing its location and direction to show who is doing the action and what they are looking at.
