Year 4
Spotlight on Learning
Jericho Community
Dear Families,
During Week 6, our Year 4 students attended Mass where we reflected on a powerful moment from the Gospel of Matthew. In this Scripture passage, Jesus gently tells his friends that he will suffer and die, preparing them for what is to come. At the same time, the disciples are shown arguing about who is the greatest. This contrast invites us to reflect on humility, service and what it truly means to follow Jesus. As we journey through Lent, students are encouraged to consider how they can put others first and act with kindness and compassion. We were very proud of the reverent and respectful way our Year 4 students participated in the Mass. Thank you to the families who were able to join us in prayer and celebration; your presence is always greatly appreciated.

Religious Education
This week in Religious Education, Year 4 students have been exploring how Jesus respected the dignity of every person he encountered. Through reading and responding to Scripture, they examined stories of Jesus healing the sick and helping those in need, while learning about the social and religious context of his time. Students were introduced to key principles of Catholic Social Teaching, especially the dignity of the human person, and discussed how being created in the image of God calls us to live in right relationship with others and the world.
English
In Week 6, Year 4 students strengthened their literacy skills across reading and writing. They practised identifying subjects and verbs in simple sentences and responded to questions about our class novel Kensuke’s Kingdom, while building fluency by reading accurately and with expression. Students also explored vocabulary from the novel and practised writing persuasive sentences using high modality words and conjunctions such as because, but and so.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been focusing on multiplication and division facts for nine. They have been using arrays to model and represent facts for nine, and to write related multiplication and division equations. Students have also been exploring the commutative law by creating arrays that show how numbers can be rearranged while the total remains the same, deepening their understanding of number relationships.
Integrated Studies
In Integrated Studies, students have been undertaking a research project about a significant place. They have been describing the place by identifying its key features and uses, explaining why it is important to people, and considering how it should be cared for. Through this inquiry, students are developing their research skills while recognising our shared responsibility to respect and protect meaningful places.
Social Emotional Learning
In Personal and Social Learning, students have been exploring their personal and cultural character strengths. They have identified strengths they see in themselves and others, and discussed how these strengths can be used in everyday situations, such as showing perseverance with challenging tasks or kindness in friendships. Students have also reflected on how recognising and using their strengths can support them to learn, build positive relationships and thrive in daily life.
Auslan
In Auslan, Year 4 students have been learning how movement and direction can change the meaning of signs. They practised using signs such as LOOK, moving the sign to show who is involved in the action. This has helped students build confidence in communicating simple ideas in Auslan.
