Principal's Message

Dear Sunshine Heights Parents and Carers,
Another big term at Sunny Heights Primary packed with learning and many other wonderful experiences for the students. Today, at our end-of-term assembly, we acknowledged the responsible behaviour of our Year 4-6 students during the Athletics Carnival, with special shout-outs from Mr Dane to students who demonstrated our school values of Commitment, Connection, Collaboration and Courage.
Some farewells and some Welcomes
Today we say goodbye to some valued staff members as they relocate or move into a new stage of Life. Mr Joel who has been working in 3A is returning to the UK to take up a teacher position. He hopes to return to our shores in the near future and we have already said he is welcome back any time. We are so grateful for the care and consideration he has given our students in his time with us both as an ES and classroom teacher.
Ms Rosa has had a long association with our school since her days as the manager of the school's after care service. In recent years Ms Rosa has worked full time as one of our Education Support staff. Her calmness and professional judgment has been a mighty asset to our school and she will be sorely missed. Even though she is beginning the retirement phase of her life to focus on supporting her amazing family the good news is, she is still planning to do casual agency work and will still be around our school from time to time.
As we say farewell to some much loved staff we welcome a new member of our teaching team. Elyse Hemara will be replacing Mr Joel in 3A and we are very excited to have her in the Sunny Heights Team. Elyse is originally from NZ and has been doing work around the corner at Glengala Primary School. Make sure you say hi and make her feel welcome next term.
New Food Sharing Policy
This term the SHPS Policy Committee met twice to work on a new Food Sharing Policy. The policy was finalised and shared with the school council at our last meeting, and is now available to be read by families. A key element of the policy is the removal of any food items when celebrating birthdays and other annual celebrations at school. Alternative class routines and norms around celebrating birthdays will be explored by the school. We encourage parents to still let teachers know when a birthday is happening so it can be acknowledged and celebrated in a safe and fun way.
The Policy Committee includes members of school leadership and the school council and is open to all parents to attend. The committee meet twice a term on Friday mornings at school. Please see the new Food Sharing Policy below.
Mr David Returning Next Term
As people are probably aware Mr David has been away for much of this term on personal leave. I have spoken to Mr David in recent days and he is recovering well and excited about returning on day one of term 2. It has been joy to work in the acting principal position this term and I thank the whole Sunny Heights Team for their support.
Holiday Wishes
Finally, we would like to wish all our families a happy and safe winter break and look forward to seeing everyone back at school on the 13th of July for another busy term of teaching and learning.
Regards
Mr Anthony
