Year 1/2 News
Happy Science Week! With our current Unit of Inquiry, How the World Works, we have been fully immersed in the world of science, perfectly preparing us for the fabulous Science Week activities organised by Miss Rachael!
Last week, we were lucky to welcome community expert Sara Sanderson, a Year 2 parent, who shared her knowledge of Earth science and geology with our Year 1 and 2 students. We put on our scientist hats and used observations, predictions and scientific tools to closely examine different rock formations. Our challenge was to determine whether we could build a city on an island!
We discovered that different types of rocks can form from volcanic ash, that some rocks are millions of years old, and that features such as holes and fossils can provide important clues about where rocks formed long ago. It was a fantastic opportunity to put our scientific thinking into action and deepen our understanding of how our world works!
Year 2
Our students had a fantastic time visiting Elwood College for a special performance of Honk!. The wonderful storytelling made it a show we all thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
Science came to life this week as our students jumped into an action-packed week of hands-on learning! On Monday, Linked Incursions visited our school. Working in teams, our young engineers put their critical thinking skills to the test through interactive physics challenges. Using Lego cars they built themselves, students explored the force of gravity on ramps, experimented with magnetic fields to control movement and harnessed electricity to power their vehicles across the finish line.
The discovery continued on Wednesday when Box of Bugs arrived. Students became mini-entomologists, building detailed bug models while exploring the science of living things through inquiry, investigation, and creative problem-solving. It was fantastic to see our classrooms buzzing with curiosity and collaborative discovery all week long!
Over the past few weeks, our classroom has transformed into a bustling research lab as students have been diving deep into scientific inquiry. They’ve been honing their skills in close observation, asking big questions, testing out ideas and carefully recording their findings to better understand how our world works.
We were so excited to welcome the parents into our classroom on Thursday afternoon to share their work. The parents witnessed Interactive student-led demonstrations and hands-on observation stations.
