Poems from Friday 14th August

Poem contributed by Layla I

Cicadas are funny little bugs.

They remain sleeping for many years, growing, preparing, primping themselves for their night in the light of the moon.

They emerge from the ground, shining and full of hormones.

A vision of emerald, onyx, and gold, buzzing and screaming through summer.

They shed their skin as they grow, leaving a frail, crisp, husk of themselves.

I’ve always believed myself to be a cicada, a funny little child, leaving husks in my wake.

I’m a vain, selfish thing, with shining skin and hair, my body so full of hormones.

I’ve spent many years growing, preparing, primping myself for my night in the light of the moon.

The moon, like the cicada, travels through cycles.

Is life not all cycles?

Am I not a cicada? Born under the moon, a vision of emerald, onyx, and gold, buzzing and screaming under Mother Luna’s rays – I scream.

I scream for the cycle, I scream for the husk I leave behind.

I am a funny little bug.

Change is a paradox

How can one thing

transform to something else

but still be labelled the same?

Silly ones make or play

with games, to the sky they play

but they are the true gods,

the world they transform

Their mind the paint, the canvas form

Reason is a fool's game

For meaning to escape its grasp

itself becomes words so futile

a man who thinks is an exile

So crush those who differ

their thoughts to splinter

spatter from their brains

but the history books will tell

who really won the game

Used to be caterpillars

Long and with short legs
