Year 9 Party Ready with St Johns

Our Year 9 students had a fantastic day with the Party Ready team, with plenty of hands-on activities, discussions and opportunities to learn some important life-saving skills.
Students worked through a range of scenarios, discussing what they could do to look after themselves and their friends, recognise when someone might be in danger and know when to get help.
Students were also able to try out special impairment goggles that created the illusion of being under the influence of alcohol. They then took on the challenge of walking a straight line while wearing the goggles — with plenty of laughs along the way! This activity helped students experience how alcohol can affect balance, coordination, vision and decision-making.
Throughout the day, students also explored:
🥤 Standard drinks and responsible choices
🚨 Alcohol poisoning and drink spiking
💊 Harm minimisation, including Naloxone
🧠 Mental health and responding to a mental health crisis
🩹 Practical first aid, including DRSABCD, bandaging and sprain management
❤️ CPR, recovery position and using a defibrillator
🧠 Concussion awareness and management
🤝 Supporting friends and making safe decisions
The day was a fantastic success, with students actively participating, asking questions, sharing ideas and putting their new skills into practice. It was a valuable opportunity for students to build practical knowledge and confidence that they can take with them beyond the classroom.
The Party Ready team also provided each student with a Party Bag containing useful information and resources from the day. If you get a chance, take a look through the bag with your young person and ask them about what they learnt or what they found interesting. It can be a simple way to continue the conversation at home about staying safe, looking out for friends and knowing where to get help when needed.
