'Inspiring Young Readers, Writers & Illustrators" Festival

Wow! What a week we had with four amazing Illustrator / Writers visiting our school between 18 & 21 May.

Our Foundation students began the week with a drawing workshop by Marjory Gardner. Our students were so engaged for the entire 60 minutes.  I hope that you had a chance to have a look at the amazing fish that they drew.

Our Years 1 & 2 had the amazing and very energetic Adam Wallace, where the students interacted with a workshop that included drawing and discussions on what makes a good story and where to get inspiration.  Adam’s simple and enthusiastic way of explaining how to draw different expressions is a sight to behold.

Years 3 & 4 were treated to very special sessions with Zeno Sworder.  They drew, they constructed a four page story and learnt that they eat cochineal bugs as red dye in foods.  Zeno was an extremely engaging speaker whose book “Once I was a Giant” won Australian Book Industry Association’s Book of the Year award. That is a massive achievement for Zeno and we privileged to have such an accomplished author/illustrator here at Greenvale Primary School.

Finally, our Year 5 & 6’s were treated to a thoughtful and engrossing talk by Amellor Mellor.  Her workshop covered building characters in stories using historical figures as the foundation for these characters.  Amellor’s book “Oceanforged” has been shortlisted for the Children’s Book of the Year Awards.  We are very fortunate to have an author of Amelia’s caliber happy to come and talk to our students.

Overdue Library Books

This week, I have sent home, with your child, a list of books that are overdue. Please return the books as soon as possible. We currently have more than 500 books overdue, so it would be great to see them back at school for others to read. Please, talk to me before  you consider paying for the books – I would rather have the books than the money. These overdue notices are a gentle reminder for you to look for them and have your child bring them back.

Scholastic book purchases using our rewards

Thanks to all the families that have purchased books through the Scholastic Book Club this term, giving Greenvale Primary School reward dollars to use towards updating our library books. We purchased 18 books which included the latest books from the immensely popular series “Weirdo”, “Pizza and Taco”, and “School of Monsters” amongst other interesting books.
