Acting Principal's Update

Greenvale Primary was pleased to welcome back Glen Pearsall on Wednesday 13th May to work with all school staff during the Curriculum Day. Glen works across Australia as an educational consultant specialising in improving positive classroom management and instructional practice.
Glen’s presentations focused on explicit teaching strategies and positive classroom dynamics—both key pillars of Victorian Teaching Learning Model (VTML) 2.0. He emphasised how clear instruction, well-structured lessons, and purposeful practice directly support student learning, while effective classroom management maximises learning time and student engagement.
Throughout the day, teachers engaged and explored specific, practical teaching strategies aligned to the model. These sessions reinforced the idea that when teachers understand how students learn, they can make more deliberate decisions about how they teach—such as breaking content into manageable steps, checking for understanding, providing targeted feedback and building positive relationships with student.
Parents or guardians are a child's first and most influential role models. From a young age, they observe the actions and attitudes of those around them, especially those they admire and trust. These observations shape their understanding of how to navigate the world. Positive role models for kids provide them with examples of how to behave in various situations, instilling values like kindness, responsibility, and perseverance.
As a parent or guardian, your influence on your child is immeasurable. You’re their first and most enduring role model. The way you handle everyday situations, from managing stress to celebrating successes, teaches your child valuable lessons about resilience, empathy, and self-control. That is why we need your help to model the expected behaviours especially when it comes to Road Safety.
It may be quicker to walk across the road where you have parked rather than walking up to the School Crossing. You can justify that your child is safe because you are holding their hand.
BUT what are you teaching them?
Sending your child mixed messages only confuses them. The ONLY safe place to cross a road is at the traffic lights or at a school crossing. As their most important Role Model you need to lead by example.
Being a good role model doesn’t mean being perfect. We know that there will be moments of frustration when navigating our school drop off and pick up.
We know the challenges - there isn’t enough parking, the roads get congested, some people take a little longer to move on and unsafe driving. BUT Road Rage is NOT acceptable in our school community. Aggressive driving, swearing and verbal abuse is not expected behaviour. This is happening more and more in our school community which is disappointing. In times like these, when faced with challenges, it’s about demonstrating qualities like honesty, compassion, and determination. By showing these values, you are showing your child how to navigate difficulties with grace and integrity, you provide them with a blueprint for handling their own struggles.
Remember the Golden Rule – TREAT OTHERS THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED.
The Golden Rule spans nearly every major world religion, culture, and ethical philosophy as a universal guide for empathy, respect, and fairness.
So before you act – ask yourself – Am I being a good role model to my child?
Would I like to be treated this way?
