Year 5/6 Learning Reflection

Welcome to Term 3!  Weeks 1 and 2.

The Grade 5/6 students began week 1 with our Life Education excursion. 

Grade 5 learnt about how to identify healthy and unhealthy relationship traits, recognizing emotions' to manage overwhelming feelings with and practice assertive communication and active listening. They also learnt about puberty, including the physical, social, and emotional changes that occur during this stage, coping strategies for handling these changes and recognising and responding to unsafe situations. The session also includes a menstruation product demonstration.

Grade 6 learnt about positive relationships, recognising their impact on well-being, understanding healthy and unhealthy characteristics, and learnt conflict resolution strategies. Students also learnt about the various factors (social, emotional, physical, legal) related to human reproduction - including foetal development, childbirth, and exploring the needs of newborns after birth.

A large part of Writing so far this term has been on sentence structure.

Grade 5/6 tudents have been learning about sentence expansion, subordinating conjunctions and dependent and independent clauses.  These are all ways to add detail or more information to our sentences and make them more interesting for the reader. These sentences have related to our new serial reads 'The Grandest Bookshop in the World' for Grade 5 and  'Us Mob Walawurru' for Grade 6.

During our Maths lessons, the students have been learning about fractions.

Adding and subtracting fractions with the same, related and different denominators, solving worded problems involving fractions and adding and subtracting mixed numerals. 

All students also contine to take part in Daily Review sessions to practice number skills they have learnt and ensure they stay in their long term memory.

Another exciting event happening in school for the Grade 5/6 students is our musical production based on the Lynley Dodds book titled 'Slinkly Malinky'. This production will be in the works for a number of weeks before all the writing, acting, singing, props etc are completed in Term 4.

So far, students have volunteered to work with Mr Anthony to create the scripts, adapted from Lynley Dodds picture story book. We are very excited for our future thesbians (actors and actresses).
