Prep Learning Reflection

Week 2 Newsletter

What a busy start to Term 3 we have had in Prep! The students have settled back into routines beautifully and have been working hard across all areas of learning.

In Maths, we have been exploring subtraction and making connections to counting backwards. Students have also started learning about doubles and have been practising recognising and building these important number facts. We have also begun exploring 3Dshapes. Students had lots of fun using playdough to mould different 3D shapes and discovered that some shapes (especially cubes!) are much trickier to create than they look!

In Systematic Knowledge, we are finishing our Geography unit by learning how to use maps to help us find our way around. After using a map of our school to explore different areas, students became little detectives, identifying places that needed some extra care and attention. We then formed our very own GreenTeam and headed outside to pick up rubbish, reorganise playground equipment and help keep our school looking its best. It has been wonderful to see our students taking such pride in looking after the spaces we all share. Next, we will be moving into our new Healthy Food unit of work.

In Sounds-Write, students have now learnt all of the initial code sounds and we are shifting our focus towards becoming more fluent readers. We are practising reading with a smooth pace, expression and appropriate volume. Knowing our high frequency words is an important part of developing fluency, as many of these words cannot be sounded out using our current code knowledge. Thank you for your continued support with practising sight words at home and encouraging your child to read their fluency cards regularly. This repetition makes a big difference in helping students build confidence, accuracy and reading stamina.

We are continuing to be bravewriters in Prep! Students are using the print around the room, their letter-sound knowledge and their growing confidence to have a go at spelling unfamiliar words. At this stage, we celebrate all attempts because every time students stretch out sounds and make choices about spelling, they are strengthening their writing skills.

A very exciting event is coming up next week — our 100 Days of School celebration! On Wednesday, we will be celebrating this wonderful milestone with some fun activities. Thank you to the families who have already sent in their 100 items. We will be using these items to create groups of ten and explore the number 100 together. We can’t wait to see our 100-year-old students dressed up and celebrate this special achievement as a Prep community!

Thank you for your ongoing support at home. Remember to keep celebrating your child’s efforts, encouraging them to have a go and reminding them how much progress they have already made. We are so proud of the way our Prep students continue to learn, grow and show bravery every day.

Have a wonderful week!

The Prep Team
