Wellbeing

Hi! My name is Penelope Mantzounis and I am starting my placement at Mount Pleasant Road Primary School for my Masters of Counselling this week. I will be working across the school to support students 1:1 and in small groups, helping them navigating the challenges of everyday school life and acquire skills and strategies to support them in their social and academic endeavours. I enjoy sports and play soccer outside of my studying – I am looking forward to engaging in lots of activities wit the students at MPRPS.

Students who work with me will be selected via the school’s referral and triage process. If you would like to discuss supports for your child, please contact Jonny Hobbs via the school office.

Community Crafternoon: thank you!

Thank you to all the families who attended our very first Crafternoon, whether it was for the whole hour or just for a short while around bell time, it was so great to see our community engaged, chatting and enjoying each others company.  Jonny, Mel and Kate valued the opportunity to meet and chat with every one of you. We aim to have another Crafternoon in Term 4, hopefully with even more people!

Indigenous Literacy Day

Next Wednesday, 2nd of September is Indigenous Literacy Day. This is a national celebration of First Nations peoples’ stories, cultures and languages created by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Every year the foundation creates a theme that showcases thestories, cultures and languages of remote Aboriginal and/orTorres Strait Islander peoples. This year the theme is Country Is Our Teacher.  

In Nunawading, we can connect with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung seasonal calendar and notice how Country changes throughout the year. August is Guling (Orchid Season), and as we move into September we enter Porneet (Tadpole Season). We can use Country as our teacher by notice further changes in plants, animals, weather and the landscape around us.

Next time you find yourself outside as a family you might explore:

• What is flowering/growing at the moment?
• What birds & animals can you see/hear?
• What changes in the weather can you observe?
• What has changed from a few weeks ago?

Every child deserves to see themselves in the books they read.

At Mount Pleasant Road, we value having a wide range of texts across our classrooms and library that allow students to see themselves, their interests and their experiences represented. Furthermore, we also encourage students to learn about people, cultures and perspectives different from their own. 

Exploring First Nations stories can be a wonderful way to build curiosity, empathy, connection and respect. It gives children an opportunity to learn from the knowledge, experiences and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Brainstorm Productions - The Protectors

Students from F - 6 had a brilliant time watching The Protectorsby Brainstorm Productions as part of Bullying No Way Week. They laughed and learned during a performance that provided them with practical strategies for help-seeking if they feel they are experiencing bullying behaviour.
